We recently identified the novel persulfide sensor SqrR that functions as a master regulator of sulfide-dependent gene expression in the purple photosynthetic bacterium Rhodobacter capsulatus. SqrR binds to the promoter regions of target genes to repress

Thioglucose-derived tetrasulfide, a unique polysulfide model compound
Polysulfides have received increased interest in redox biology due to their role as the precursors of H2S and persulfides. However, the compounds that are suitable for biological investigations are limited to cysteine- and glutathione-derived ...

Polysulfides promote ATF6 oligomerization via persulfidation to modulate ER stress responses
ATF6 is a UPR sensor regulated by redox modification of luminal cysteine residues. Although polysulfides modulate proteins through cysteine persulfidation, their effect on ATF6 has been unclear.

Self-S-sulfonation in a bacterial persulfide dioxygenase mediates thiol persulfide detoxification
A ubiquitous class of non-heme Fe(II) enzymes, the persulfide dioxygenases (PDOs), provide protection against hydrogen sulfide (H2S) poisoning. The PDO in humans is a single-domain enzyme, while bacterial PDOs, such as CstB of Staphylococcus aureus, are often fused to a sulfurtransferase (rhodanese) module.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is an endogenously produced signaling molecule. The enzymes 3-mercaptopyruvate sulfurtransferase (MST), partly localized in mitochondria, and the inner mitochondrial membrane-associated sulfide:quinone oxidoreductase (SQR), besides

The sulfur dioxygenase ETHE1 oxidizes persulfides in the mitochondrial matrix and is involved in the degradation of L-cysteine and hydrogen sulfide. ETHE1 has an essential but as yet undefined function in early embryo development of Arabidopsis thaliana.

Ascorbate (AsA), or vitamin C, is a central redox metabolite that functions as an antioxidant, enzyme cofactor, and electron donor. Its cellular function depends not only on biosynthesis or dietary uptake, but also on rapid recycling from its oxidized ...

Reactive sulfane sulfur species such as persulfides (RSSH) and H2S2 are important redox regulators and closely linked to H2S signaling. However, the study of these species is still challenging due to their instability, high reactivity, and the lack of ...
