Understanding how genetically encoded tags and crowding agents affect phase separation by heterochromatin protein HP1α

open access: yesCell Reports: Methods
Summary: The heterochromatin protein HP1α (heterochromatin protein 1 alpha) phase separates in vitro and displays properties compatible with phase separation in cells.

Phase separation in t-J ladders

open access: yes, 1999
The phase separation boundary of isotropic t-J ladders is analyzed using density matrix renormalization group techniques. The complete boundary to phase separation as a function of J/t and doping is determined for a chain and for ladders with two, three ...

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Higher-order anisotropic models in phase separation

open access: yesAdvances in Nonlinear Analysis, 2017
Our aim in this paper is to study higher-order (in space) Allen–Cahn and Cahn–Hilliard models. In particular, we obtain well-posedness results, as well as the existence of the global attractor.

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Phase separation of Bose-Einstein condensates

open access: yes, 1997
The zero-temperature system of two dilute overlapping Bose-Einstein condensates is unstable against long wavelength excitations if the interaction strength between the distinguishable bosons exceeds the geometric mean of the like-boson interaction ...

Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...

Effect of clay materials on phase separation in plastic bag waste-modified bitumen during high-temperature storage

open access: yesTransportation Engineering
Phase separation at high storage temperatures is a significant challenge in the practical application of polymer-modified bitumen (PmB), as it impacts negatively the uniformity and stability of modified binders.

Laser-induced phase separation of silicon carbide

open access: yesNature Communications, 2016
Laser beam-induced processing is industrially relevant but often challenging to study in terms of underlying phase transformations. Here authors characterize formation of thin, phase-separated carbon and silicon layers on a silicon carbide substrate by ...

Phase separation and nucleation in mixtures of particles with different temperatures

open access: yes, 2020
Differences in activities in colloidal particles are sufficient to drive phase separation between active and passive (or less active) particles, even if they have only excluded volume interactions.
