DOPA pheomelanin is increased in nigral neuromelanin of Parkinson’s disease

open access: yesProgress in Neurobiology, 2023
Neuromelanin (NM) in dopaminergic neurons of human substantia nigra (SN) has a melanic component that consists of pheomelanin and eumelanin moieties and has been proposed as a key factor contributing to dopaminergic neuron vulnerability in Parkinson's disease (PD).

How does pheomelanin synthesis contribute to melanomagenesis? [PDF]

open access: yesBioEssays, 2013
Recently, we reported that melanoma risk in redheads is linked not only to pale skin, but also to the synthesis of the pigment – called pheomelanin – that gives red hair its color. We demonstrated that pheomelanin synthesis is associated with increased oxidative stress in the skin, yet we have not uncovered the chemical pathway between the molecule ...

Selenomelanin: An Abiotic Selenium Analogue of Pheomelanin

Journal of the American Chemical Society, 2020
Melanins are a family of heterogeneous biopolymers found ubiquitously across plant, animal, bacterial, and fungal kingdoms where they act variously as pigments and as radiation protection agents. There exist five multifunctional yet structurally and biosynthetically incompletely understood varieties of melanin: eumelanin, neuromelanin, pyomelanin ...

Optimization of Conditions for Preparing Synthetic Pheomelanin

Pigment Cell Research, 1989
Synthetic melanins are often used as the standards for natural melanins. Conditions for preparing synthetic pheomelanin from L‐dopa and L‐cysteine were studied under different temperatures (25 and 37deg;C), different amounts of cysteine (1.5 and 2.0 eq), and different amounts of tyrosinase (10 and 20 mg).

PHEOMELANIN PHOTOCHEMISTRY. PHOTOLYSIS OF MODEL COMPOUNDS

Photochemistry and Photobiology, 1982
Abstract Two pheomelanin model compounds were prepared and their photochemistries examined. Upon irradiation, an oxygen‐mediated photopolymerization reaction was observed. The photopolymers obtained were characterized by their apparent molecular weights, UV and fluorescence spectra.

Biosynthetic and structural studies on pheomelanin

Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Protein Structure and Molecular Enzymology, 1987
13C-NMR spectroscopy of pheomelanin biopolymers, prepared from isotopically enriched precursors, has been developed as a tool for structure elucidation of melanins. By employing large pulse-widths and short cycle time, only the signals originating from labeled carbons are observed in the high-resolution spectra of these polymers.
