Physical exercise stimulates salivary secretion of cystatins

open access: yesPLOS ONE, 2019
Physical exercise is known to activate the sympathetic nervous system, which influences the production of saliva from salivary glands. Our examination of saliva collected from highly trained athletes before and after a number of physical competititions showed an increase in the secretion of S-type cystatins and cystatin C as a subacute response to ...

Potential therapeutic targeting of BKCa channels in glioblastoma treatment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review summarizes current insights into the role of BKCa and mitoBKCa channels in glioblastoma biology, their potential classification as oncochannels, and the emerging pharmacological strategies targeting these channels, emphasizing the translational challenges in developing BKCa‐directed therapies for glioblastoma treatment.

Severely atrophic human muscle fibers with nuclear misplacement survive many years of permanent denervation

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Translational Myology, 2016
Likewise in rodents, after complete spinal cord injury (SCI) the lower motor neuron (LMN) denervated human muscle fibers lose completely the myofibrillar apparatus and the coil distribution of myonuclei that are relocated in groups (nuclear clumps) in ...

Hybrid Therapeutic Device (CUHK-OA-M2) for Relieving Symptoms Induced by Knee Osteoarthritis

open access: yesBioengineering, 2023
The symptoms of knee osteoarthritis (KOA) severely affect the life quality of the elderly population. Low-level laser therapy, heat therapy, and massage therapy are widely used as independent treatments for joint disorders.

Physical factors in the stimulation of calonic peristalsis [PDF]

open access: yesGut, 1970
The effect of colonic distension and changes in intraluminal pH and osmolality have been investigated in patients with well established colostomies. Small volumes of acidic buffer (pH4) and hypertonic saline (4%) were found to be only a very weak peristaltic stimulus.

RIPK4 function interferes with melanoma cell adhesion and metastasis

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
RIPK4 promotes melanoma growth and spread. RIPK4 levels increase as skin lesions progress to melanoma. CRISPR/Cas9‐mediated deletion of RIPK4 causes melanoma cells to form less compact spheroids, reduces their migratory and invasive abilities and limits tumour growth and dissemination in mouse models.

Biology of muscle atrophy and of its recovery by FES in aging and mobility impairments: roots and by-products

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Translational Myology, 2015
There is something in our genome that dictates life expectancy and there is nothing that can be done to avoid this; indeed, there is not yet any record of a person who has cheated death.

Comparative Transcriptomic Analysis Reveals Variable Responses to the Brown Planthopper Nilaparvata lugens in Different Rice Cultivars

open access: yesCrops, 2023
Rice is an indispensable crop in East and Southeast Asia, and the study of its biological characteristics has important value. We observed that different cultivars of rice have different levels of resistance to the brown planthopper (BPH), Nilaparvata ...

Stimulated Raman adiabatic passage analogues in classical physics [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Physics B: Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics, 2009
Stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) is a well established technique for producing coherent population transfer in a three-state quantum system. We here exploit the resemblance between the Schrodinger equation for such a quantum system and the Newton equation of motion for a classical system undergoing torque to discuss several classical analogs
