Bioinformatics Analysis and Identification of Phytoene Synthase Gene in Microalgae
Recent Patents on Biotechnology, 2021Background: Carotenoids are known as lipophilic secondary metabolites with important biological activities, which are mostly used in the food and pharmaceutical industry. They contribute to the colours of many fruits and flowers. Studies on the biosynthetic pathways of isoprenoids and carotenoids are still scarce, especially in microalgae and are ...

Phytoene synthase (PSase) catalyzes the condensation of two molecules of geranylgeranyl diphosphate (GGPP) to give prephytoene diphosphate (PPPP) and the subsequent rearrangement of the cyclopropylcarbinyl intermediate to phytoene. These reactions constitute the first pathway specific step in carotenoid biosynthesis.

Envelope membranes of spinach chloroplasts contain appreciable activities of the carotenogenic enzymes phytoene synthase (formation of phytoene by condensation of two molecules geranylgeranyl pyrophosphate) and phytoene dehydrogenase (formation of lycopene from phytoene), plus a phosphatase activity.

Phytoene Accumulation in Sunflower Decreases the Transcript Levels of the Phytoene Synthase Gene
Plant Growth Regulation, 2006The non dormant-1 (nd-1) mutant of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) and fluridone-treated plants were used to investigate the effect of phytoene accumulation on the transcript levels of the phytoene synthase (Ha-PSY) gene. A deficiency at the gene coding for ζ-carotene desaturase (ZDS) characterises the nd-1 mutant, which displays an accumulation of ζ ...
