A CRISPR-Cas9-Derived Male Sterility System for Tomato Breeding

open access: yesAgronomy, 2023
Male sterility can reduce cost and enable high seed purity during hybrid seed production. However, the commercial application of male sterility in hybrid seed production has not been widely used in tomatoes.

Protein pyrophosphorylation by inositol pyrophosphates — detection, function, and regulation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Protein pyrophosphorylation is an unusual signaling mechanism that was discovered two decades ago. It can be driven by inositol pyrophosphate messengers and influences various cellular processes. Herein, we summarize the research progress and challenges of this field, covering pathways found to be regulated by this posttranslational modification as ...

Regulation of Arabidopsis 14-3-3 gene expression by GABA. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
The function in plants of the non-protein amino acid, gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is poorly understood. In this study, we show that GABA down-regulates the expression of a large sub-set of 14-3-3 gene family members in Arabidopsis thaliana seedlings ...

The genetically programmed rhythmic alteration of diurnal gene expression in the aged Arabidopsis leaves

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science
The circadian clock regulates the daily pattern of temporal gene expression. In Arabidopsis, aging is associated with a shortening of the endogenous period of circadian rhythms under circadian conditions.

The FAD2 Gene in Plants: Occurrence, Regulation, and Role [PDF]

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science, 2017
Vegetable oils rich in oleic acid are more desirable than oils rich in polyunsaturated and saturated fatty acids. The biological switch of oleic acid to linoleic acid is facilitated by fatty acid desaturase 2 enzyme that is further classified into FAD2-1, FAD2-2, FAD2-3, and FAD2-4.

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

Regulation of Anthocyanin Accumulation in Tomato Solanum lycopersicum L. by Exogenous Synthetic dsRNA Targeting Different Regions of SlTRY Gene

open access: yesPlants
RNA interference (RNAi) is a regulatory and protective mechanism that plays a crucial role in the growth, development, and control of plant responses to pathogens and abiotic stresses.

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Down-regulation of CBP80 gene expression as a strategy to engineer a drought-tolerant potato [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Developing new strategies for crop plants to respond to drought is crucial for their innovative breeding. The down-regulation of nuclear cap-binding proteins in Arabidopsis renders plants drought tolerant.

Impact of Exogenous dsRNA on miRNA Composition in Arabidopsis thaliana

open access: yesPlants
The application of double-stranded RNAs (dsRNAs) to plant surfaces has emerged as a promising tool for manipulating gene expression in plants and pathogens, offering new opportunities for crop improvement.
