Ubiquitin and ubiquitin‐like modifications in the endoplasmic reticulum stress response

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, Volume 293, Issue 18, Page 5481-5513, September 2026.
Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress activates various proteostasis control processes, including the unfolded protein response, ribosome‐associated quality control, and ER‐associated degradation. Ubiquitin and ubiquitin‐like modifications dynamically regulate these processes to determine cell fate, promoting adaptation or inducing cell death.

A requirement of Polo-like kinase 1 in murine embryonic myogenesis and adult muscle regeneration

open access: yeseLife, 2019
Muscle development and regeneration require delicate cell cycle regulation of embryonic myoblasts and adult muscle satellite cells (MuSCs). Through analysis of the Polo-like kinase (Plk) family cell-cycle regulators in mice, we show that Plk1’s ...

Polo-like kinase 1 inhibits the activity of positive transcription elongation factor of RNA Pol II b (P-TEFb).

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2013
Polo-like kinase 1 (Plk1) is a highly conserved Ser/Thr kinase in eukaryotes and plays a critical role in various aspects of the cell cycle. Plk1 exerts its multiple functions by phosphorylating its substrates.

Deciphering the Dysregulated Pathways and Candidate Therapeutic Compounds for Primary Ovarian Cancer Using Whole Transcriptomics Data and Next Generation Knowledge Discovery Strategies

open access: yesJournal of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, Volume 30, Issue 18, September 2026.
ABSTRACT Ovarian cancer (OC) is a type of gynaecological cancer with a higher mortality rate due to diagnosis at an advanced stage and limited treatment options. This study aimed to leverage transcriptomic data to identify cellular and molecular pathways and potential anti‐cancer compounds that specifically target primary invasive epithelial ovarian ...

Cell Cycle: On-Time Delivery of Plk1 during Cytokinesis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
At anaphase, the kinase Plk1 localizes to the spindle midzone, where it orchestrates cytokinesis. New work has now identified PRC1 as a Plk1-delivery factor that is tightly controlled by opposing cyclin B–Cdk1- and Plk1-dependent ...

Comparative Response of Canine and Human Osteosarcoma Tumour Cell Lines to Molecularly Targeted Anticancer Agents at Clinically Relevant Exposures With Analysis of Genomic Biomarkers

open access: yesVeterinary and Comparative Oncology, Volume 24, Issue 3, Page 532-544, September 2026.
ABSTRACT Osteosarcoma (OSA) is a primary bone tumour occurring in children but is also prevalent in large breed dogs. Canine OSA (cOSA) has long been viewed as analogous to human OSA (hOSA) with cOSA serving as a surrogate for development of therapeutic approaches to treat the rarer human form.

PLK1 phosphorylates WRN at replication forks

open access: yesThe Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics
Prostate cancer, particularly castration-resistant prostate cancer, remains a serious public health issue. Androgen signaling inhibitors have emerged as a major treatment approach but with limited success. Thus, identification of novel treatment targets is of high clinical relevance.

Effect of adenovirus-delivered Plk1 on HeLa cell number and Plk1 activity.

open access: yes, 2013
Plk1 enhanced cell division in HeLa cells at 48 hours post infection (A and B). The activity of adenovirus-delivered Plk1 was assessed in P10 cardiac myocytes (C).

Normal Cells, but Not Cancer Cells, Survive Severe Plk1 Depletion

open access: yes, 2019
We previously reported the phenotype of depletion of polo-like kinase 1 (Plk1) using RNA interference (RNAi) and showed that p53 is stabilized in Plk1-depleted cancer cells.
