Molecular Control of Polyene Macrolide Biosynthesis [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Biological Chemistry, 2011
Control of polyene macrolide production in Streptomyces natalensis is mediated by the transcriptional activator PimM. This regulator, which combines an N-terminal PAS domain with a C-terminal helix-turn-helix motif, is highly conserved among polyene biosynthetic gene clusters.

Antibiotic-sterol interactions provide insight into the selectivity of natural aromatic analogues of amphotericin B and their photoisomers

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2023
Aromatic heptaene macrolides (AHMs) belong to the group of polyene macrolide antifungal antibiotics. Members of this group were the first to be used in the treatment of systemic fungal infections.

Fluorescent Probes Derived from the Polyene Class of Antifungal Drugs Reveal Distinct Localization Patterns and Resistance‐Associated Vacuolar Sequestration in Candida Species

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, Volume 138, Issue 2, 9 January 2026.
Fluorescent probes derived from all three clinically used polyene antifungals (amphotericin B, nystatin, and natamycin) enabled direct visualization of distribution in yeast cells of various Candida species. While retaining the ergosterol‐dependent mode of action of their parent drugs, the probes revealed distinct, structure‐specific localization ...

Stimulated Biosynthesis of an C10-Deoxy Heptaene NPP B2 via Regulatory Genes Overexpression in Pseudonocardia autotrophica

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2020
Polyene macrolides, such as nystatin A1, amphotericin B, and NPP A1, belong to a large family of valuable antifungal polyketide compounds that are typically produced by soil actinomycetes.

Multi‐Omic Assessment of Microbial Communities and Their Polyketide Biosynthetic Potential Across Abyssal Sediments

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology, Volume 28, Issue 5, May 2026.
Abyssal sediments were assessed for taxonomic diversity and polyketide biosynthetic potential and compared to metagenomic and metabolomic assessments of the same sediments. Biodiversity differences were documented across biogeochemical regimes with the results providing baseline awareness of what might be lost should deep‐sea microbiomes be disrupted ...

Integrated Multi‐Omics Analysis of a Periplaneta americana Symbiont Streptomyces sampsonii Strain WA1‐19 Against Candida albicans

open access: yesMicrobial Biotechnology, Volume 19, Issue 4, April 2026.
An integrated multi‐omics methodology was established in this study to implement a hazard‐to‐solution paradigm, valorizing a Streptomyces sampsonii strain WA1‐19 isolated from Periplaneta americana as a sustainable bioresource for Candida albicans biocontrol.

A Comprehensive Review of Acne Treatments: Unpacking the Chemical Structures and Effective Bioactive Compounds

open access: yesHealth Science Reports, Volume 9, Issue 2, February 2026.
ABSTRACT Background and Aims Acne vulgaris is a frequent skin disorder, affecting a large part of the population worldwide, and strongly influencing not only the physical but also the mental aspects of health. The choice of therapy for acne vulgaris is a very difficult one because the multifactorial causality of the disease and interindividual ...
