Diversity and biosynthetic potential of culturable microbes associated with toxic marine animals [PDF]
Tetrodotoxin (TTX) is a neurotoxin that has been reported from taxonomically diverse organisms across 14 different phyla. The biogenic origin of tetrodotoxin is still disputed, however, TTX biosynthesis by host-associated bacteria has been reported.

Evolutionary Implications of Bacterial Polyketide Synthases [PDF]
Polyketide synthases (PKS) perform a stepwise biosynthesis of diverse carbon skeletons from simple activated carboxylic acid units. The products of the complex pathways possess a wide range of pharmaceutical properties, including antibiotic, antitumor, antifungal, and immunosuppressive activities. We have performed a comprehensive phylogenetic analysis

Kaitocephalin (KCP) is a neuroprotective fungal metabolite with a unique scaffold of amino acids linked via C–C bonds. Genome‐transcriptome analyses identified its biosynthetic gene cluster (kpb cluster) in Eupenicillium shearii. LC‐MS/MS profiling identified four new KCP‐related compounds.

Gating mechanism of elongating β-ketoacyl-ACP synthases. [PDF]
Carbon-carbon bond forming reactions are essential transformations in natural product biosynthesis. During de novo fatty acid and polyketide biosynthesis, β-ketoacyl-acyl carrier protein (ACP) synthases (KS), catalyze this process via a decarboxylative ...

The role of the phosphopantetheinyltransferase enzyme, PswP, in the biosynthesis of antimicrobial secondary metabolites by Serratia marcescens Db10 [PDF]
Phosphopantetheinyltransferase (PPTase) enzymes fulfil essential roles in primary and secondary metabolism in prokaryotes, archaea and eukaryotes. PPTase enzymes catalyse the essential modification of the carrier protein domain of fatty acid synthases ...

Evidence for an iterative module in chain elongation on the azalomycin polyketide synthase
The assembly-line synthases that produce bacterial polyketide natural products follow a modular paradigm in which each round of chain extension is catalysed by a different set or module of enzymes.

The rough lemon pathotype of Alternaria alternata produces host-selective ACR-toxin and causes Alternaria leaf spot disease of rough lemon (Citrus jambhiri). The structure of ACR-toxin I (MW = 496) consists of a polyketide with an α-dihydropyrone ring in

Mining microbial genomes for new natural products and biosynthetic pathways [PDF]
Analyses of microbial genome sequences have revealed numerous examples of ‘cryptic’ or ‘orphan’ biosynthetic gene clusters, with the potential to direct the production of novel, structurally complex natural products.
