Simeprevir restores the anti-Staphylococcus activity of polymyxins

open access: yes, 2023
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection poses a severe threat to global public health due to its high mortality. Currently, polymyxins are mainly used for the treatment of Gram-negative bacterial-related infection, while exhibiting ...

Polymyxins resistance : an overview of molecular mechanisms and genetic determinants [PDF]

open access: yes, 2021
Emergence of antimicrobial resistant bacteria is a majorworldwide public health issue. During the past decades, the misuse/overuse of antibiotics accelerated the development and dissemination of antimicrobial resistance, especially in multidrug-resistant

Advances in BODIPY Derivatives for Antibacterial Phototherapy

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, EarlyView.
This review systematically summarizes the design strategies and structure‐activity relationships of BODIPY‐based antibacterial phototherapy, covering molecular engineering of small‐molecule photosensitizers and nanoplatforms, bacterial targeting and carrier design, and discussing the challenges and future perspectives associated with clinical ...

Review of the international consensus guidelines for the optimal use of the polymyxins [PDF]

open access: yesКлиническая микробиология и антимикробная химиотерапия, 2019
Polymyxins are often the only agents that remain in vitro active against extensively resistant bacterial pathogens. However, the use of polymyxins is compromised by the number of unresolved issues, including the technical aspects of antimicrobial ...

Neurodegenerative Disease Treatment Drug PBT2 Breaks Intrinsic Polymyxin Resistance in Gram-Positive Bacteria

open access: yesAntibiotics, 2022
Gram-positive bacteria do not produce lipopolysaccharide as a cell wall component. As such, the polymyxin class of antibiotics, which exert bactericidal activity against Gram-negative pathogens, are ineffective against Gram-positive bacteria.

Antimicrobial Stewardship and Its Impact on the Changing Epidemiology of Polymyxin Use in a South Indian Healthcare Setting

open access: yesAntibiotics, 2021
Polymyxins being last resort drugs to treat infections triggered by multidrug-resistant pathogens necessitates the implementation of antimicrobial stewardship program (ASP) initiatives to support its rational prescription across healthcare settings.

Polymyxins: “Last Resort” for MDR and/or XDR Gram-Negative Infections

open access: yes, 2021
Polymyxins were used for the management of gram-negative infections in clinical practice science1940s. Parenteral administration waned in the seventies owing to polymyxins nephrotoxicity and neurotoxicity. Because of the lack of treatment choices for MDR

Polymyxin Resistance and Heteroresistance Are Common in Clinical Isolates of Achromobacter Species and Correlate with Modifications of the Lipid A Moiety of Lipopolysaccharide

open access: yesMicrobiology Spectrum, 2023
The Achromobacter genus includes opportunistic pathogens that can cause chronic infections in immunocompromised patients, especially in people with cystic fibrosis (CF). Treatment of Achromobacter infections is complicated by antimicrobial resistance. In

Adipocyte‐Derived Leptolin Enhances Energy Expenditure and Prevents Obesity

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
We identified a novel adipokine, which we named leptolin. In humans, leptolin levels in white adipose tissue were positively correlated with exercise and negatively associated with body mass index. We observed elevated leptolin in serum from athletes and lower leptolin in serum from obese individuals.
