Influence of polysaccharide concentration on polyphenol-polysaccharide interactions
Carbohydrate Polymers, 2021Non-covalent interactions between polysaccharides and phenolics affect the physical properties of polysaccharide solutions. These interactions may in turn be influenced by polysaccharide-polysaccharide interactions. To test this hypothesis, we studied the influence of polysaccharide concentration (with guar, β-glucans, and xanthan) on the variations of

Crystalline polysaccharides: A review
Carbohydrate Polymers, 2022The biodegradability and mechanical properties of polysaccharides are dependent on their architecture (linear or branched) as well as their crystallinity (size of crystals and crystallinity percent). The amount of crystalline zones in the polysaccharide significantly governs their ultimate properties and applications (from packaging to biomedicine ...

Polysaccharide lyases (or eliminases) are a class of enzymes (EC 4.2.2.-) that act to cleave certain activated glycosidic linkages present in acidic polysaccharides. These enzymes act through an eliminase mechanism, rather than through hydrolysis, resulting in unsaturated oligosaccharide products.

Fungal bioactive polysaccharides are well known and have been widely used in Asia as a part of the traditional diet and medicine. In fact, some biopolymers (mainly β-glucans or glycoconjugate) have already made their way to the market as antitumor or immunostimulating drugs.

The Pneumococcal Polysaccharides
1964Publisher Summary This chapter focuses on pneumococcal polysaccharides. The pneumococci are ovoid, nonmotile, nonsporing organisms that usually occur in pairs enveloped by a capsule. The capsule is the most striking morphologic feature of the organism and is most voluminous when the organism is at its most virulent stage.

Publisher Summary Polysaccharides, both free and associated with other body constituents, form a significant part of living cell. The diverse functions suggested for the polysaccharides range from their being an energy source (glycogen), blood group determinants (blood group polysaccharides), anticoagulants (heparins), structural material of ground ...

Fungal polysaccharides are cell wall components which may act as antigens or as structural substrates. As antigens, the role of mannans in Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Candida albicans, and of glycoproteins in Aspergillus fumigatus are discussed. Analyses on beta-glucan synthetase in Paracoccidioides brasiliensis and the inhibitory effect of Hansenula ...

Chemical synthesis of polysaccharides and polysaccharide mimetics
Progress in Polymer Science, 2017Abstract Polysaccharides are ubiquitous in nature, and play many critical roles in biology. As such, the synthesis of polysaccharides and of polymers mimicking the structure or function of polysaccharides is of keen interest in order to reveal structure-function relationships and to prepare biocompatible and biodegradable materials for research and ...

Polysaccharides, Modified Polysaccharides and Polysaccharide Blends for Biodegradable Materials
1990Bacterial and fungal polysaccharides were explored as biodegradable materials. Chemical modification of these polymers were studied in an effort to enhance certain mechanical properties such as tensile strength and to reduce water solubility. Reactions studied included crosslinking and specific substitutions to functionalize the polymer chains. Polymer
