Porcine Lymphotropic Herpesviruses (PLHVs) and Xenotranplantation

open access: yesViruses, 2021
Porcine lymphotropic herpesviruses -1, -2 and -3 (PLHV-1, PLHV-2 and PLHV-3) are gammaherpesviruses which are widespread in pigs. They are closely related to the Epstein–Barr virus (EBV) and Kaposi sarcoma herpesvirus, both of which cause severe diseases

Varicellovirus UL 49.5 proteins differentially affect the function of the transporter associated with antigen processing, TAP [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Cytotoxic T-lymphocytes play an important role in the protection against viral infections, which they detect through the recognition of virus-derived peptides, presented in the context of MHC class I molecules at the surface of the infected cell.

Virus Safety of Xenotransplantation

open access: yesViruses, 2022
The practice of xenotransplantation using pig islet cells or organs is under development to alleviate the shortage of human donor islet cells or organs for the treatment of diabetes or organ failure.

Experimental transplacental transmission of porcine cytomegalovirus [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Hygiene, 1977
SUMMARYSix serologically negative sows were infected by intranasal instillation of porcine cytomegalovirus (PCMV) between 31 and 85 days of pregnancy. Four sows showed an afebrile anorexia and lethargy 14–25 days after infection and all 6 developed significant increases in indirect immunofluorescent (IIF) antibody titres within 35 days.

PCR Assay for Detecting Porcine Cytomegalovirus [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Clinical Microbiology, 1999
ABSTRACT This is the first published report of a PCR assay for detecting porcine cytomegalovirus (PCMV), the causative agent of inclusion body rhinitis in pigs. The DNA to be tested was extracted directly from lungs and nasal scrapings of pigs with various clinical syndromes. Fifty-nine percent (74 of 126) of tested pigs with various clinical

Virological Characterization of Pigs with Erythema Multiforme

open access: yesMicroorganisms, 2022
Erythema multiforme in pigs is an acute, self-limiting disease characterized by red skin areas and often associated with anorexia, fever and respiratory problems. The cause of the disease remains unknown.

Reactivation of Porcine Cytomegalovirus through Allogeneic Stimulation [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Clinical Microbiology, 2004
ABSTRACT Reactivation of latent porcine cytomegalovirus after coculture of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from pigs with different genetic backgrounds was investigated. Nine of 10 allogeneic coculture pairs were PCR (DNA) positive, whereas 7 coculture pairs had porcine cytomegalovirus (PCMV) RNA, an indication of ...

Susceptibility of porcine cytomegalovirus to antiviral drugs [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy, 2004
Re-activation of porcine cytomegalovirus (PCMV) in the xenograft has been reported in pig-to-baboon models of xenotransplantation and is associated with invasive disease and consumptive coagulopathy. If xenotransplantation of porcine organs into human recipients is to proceed, donor organs will have to be free from a wide range of infectious agents ...

Cellular xenotransplantation of animal cells into people: benefits and risk [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
The main benefit of xenotransplantation is its potential to overcome the worldwide organ shortage experienced in allotransplantation. Allogeneic transplantation is the only successful therapy for several life-threatening diseases, with cell, tissue or ...
