The behaviour of porcine cytomegalovirus in commercial pig herds [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Hygiene, 1976
SUMMARYA longitudinal, virological and serological study of pigs in two herds with respiratory disease showed that infection by porcine cytomegalovirus (PCMV) was universal in both.Virus excretion usually began when piglets were between 3 and 6 weeks of age and reached a maximum between 5 and 8 weeks; it was usually no longer detectable at 11–12 weeks.

Generation of cloned transgenic pigs rich in omega-3 fatty acids [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Meat products are generally low in omega-3 (n-3) fatty acids, which are beneficial to human health. We describe the generation of cloned pigs that express a humanized Caenorhabditis elegans gene, fat-1, encoding an n-3 fatty acid desaturase.

Activation of Porcine Cytomegalovirus, but Not Porcine Lymphotropic Herpesvirus, in Pig‐to‐Baboon Xenotransplantation [PDF]

open access: yesThe Journal of Infectious Diseases, 2004
Tissue-invasive disease due to porcine cytomegalovirus (PCMV) has been demonstrated after pig-to-baboon solid-organ xenotransplantation. Porcine lymphotropic herpesvirus (PLHV)-1 is associated with B cell proliferation and posttransplant lymphoproliferative disorder after allogeneic bone marrow transplantation in swine but has not been observed in pig ...

Pathogen-reactive T helper cell analysis in the pig [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
There is growing interest in studying host-pathogen interactions in human-relevant large animal models such as the pig. Despite the progress in developing immunological reagents for porcine T cell research, there is an urgent need to directly assess ...

Virological and Parasitological Characterization of Mini-LEWE Minipigs Using Improved Screening Methods and an Overview of Data on Various Minipig Breeds

open access: yesMicroorganisms, 2021
Minipigs play an important role in biomedical research and have also been used as donor animals in xenotransplantation. To serve as a donor in xenotransplantation, the animals must be free of potential zoonotic viruses, bacteria and parasites.

Molecular survey of Cytomegalovirus shedding profile in commercial pig herds in Brazil

open access: yesJournal of Infection in Developing Countries, 2016
Introduction: Porcine cytomegalovirus (PCMV) causes rhinitis in both young and older pigs. The present study describes the detection and characterization of shedding profiles of PCMV in nine farrow-to-finish Brazilian swine herds.

Objective pathogen monitoring in nursery and finisher pigs by monthly laboratory diagnostic testing

open access: yesPorcine Health Management, 2020
Background Infectious diseases are of great economic importance in commercial pig production, causing both clinical and subclinical disease, with influence on welfare, productivity, and antibiotic use.

Investigating porcine parvoviruses genogroup 2 infection using in situ polymerase chain reaction [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Background Porcine parvovirus 2 (PPV2) was detected in swine serum without showing any relationship with disease. The emergence of the virus seemed to be a unique event until other genetically highly similar parvoviruses were identified in China and ...

Diversity of respiratory viruses present in nasal swabs under influenza suspicion in respiratory disease cases of weaned pigs

open access: yesFrontiers in Veterinary Science, 2022
Respiratory diseases in weaned pigs are a common problem, with a complex etiology involving both viruses and bacteria. In the present study, we investigated the presence of eleven viruses in nasal swabs, collected from nurseries (55 cases) under the ...
