Microbial keystone taxa and metabolic signatures in centenarians regulate intestinal homeostasis during aging

open access: yesiMeta, EarlyView.
Clostridium scindens and its metabolite indole‐3‐acetic acid (IAA) are identified as a keystone taxon and metabolic signature in centenarians. Clostridium scindens enhances microbial network stability and produces IAA via its own amidase (AMIE) and aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH), thus promoting intestinal homeostasis by activating the aryl hydrocarbon ...

Steroidopathies and hormonal imbalance in children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder

open access: yesJCPP Advances, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition with a multifactorial etiology, many aspects of which remain unclear. Emerging evidence suggests a potential association between ASD and clinical manifestations resulting from hormonal imbalances, henceforth named “steroidopathies.” The present study aims to ...

Evaluation of Potential Hormonal Activities of Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera)

open access: yesPhytotherapy Research, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Ashwagandha is a widely used herb in traditional medicine systems, particularly Ayurveda. Despite its extensive tradition, growing concerns regarding its potential endocrinological effects have prompted scientific scrutiny. This review systematically evaluates the current preclinical, clinical, and case study evidence concerning AS's effects ...

Neurosteroids Progesterone and Dehydroepiandrosterone: Molecular Mechanisms of Action in Neuroprotection and Neuroinflammation

open access: yesPharmaceuticals
Neurosteroids pregnenolone, progesterone, allopregnanolone, and dehydroepiandrosterone have been actively studied in the last years as candidates for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases and postinjury rehabilitation.

Synthesis and Evaluation of Some 17-Acetamidoandrostane and N,N-Dimethyl-7-deoxycholic Amide Derivatives as Cytotoxic Agents: Structure/Activity Studies

open access: yesMolecules, 2013
Using pregnenolone and 7-deoxycholic acid as starting materials, some 17-acetamidoandrostane and N,N-dimethyl-7-deoxycholic amide derivatives were synthesized. The cytotoxicity of the synthesized compounds was tested in vitro against two tumor cell lines:

Evaluation of a non‐radioactive rapid test for determination of serum progesterone in South American camelids

open access: yesVeterinary Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Determination of the serum progesterone (P4) concentration is of high importance in reproductive medicine and may be applied for diagnosing pregnancy in South American camelids. P4 measurements in alpacas and llamas are usually performed using immunoassays, which are time consuming and require appropriate expertise of laboratory ...

Pregnenolone sulphate-independent inhibition of TRPM3 channels by progesterone

open access: yes, 2012
Transient Receptor Potential Melastatin 3 (TRPM3) is a widely expressed calcium-permeable non-selective cation channel that is stimulated by high concentrations of nifedipine or by physiological steroids that include pregnenolone sulphate. Here we sought

First Non‐Invasive Monitoring of Fecal Steroids in Greater Caribbean Manatees (Trichechus manatus manatus)

open access: yesZoo Biology, EarlyView.
This study established the first fecal hormonal reference values (P4/E2) for the Greater Caribbean manatee. Using non‐invasive ELISA, the authors found no significant differences between mature and immature females, highlighting that long‐term monitoring and ultrasounds are essential to fully understand their complex reproductive cycles.

Pregnenolone can protect the brain from cannabis intoxication

open access: yes, 2014
Pregnenolone is considered the inactive precursor of all steroid hormones, and its potential functional effects have been largely uninvestigated. The administration of the main active principle of Cannabis sativa (marijuana), Δ(9)-tetrahydrocannabinol ...

Niemann-Pick Type C2 protein contributes to the transport of endosomal cholesterol to mitochondria without interacting with NPC1[S]

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 2012
Mitochondrial cholesterol is maintained within a narrow range to regulate steroid and oxysterol synthesis and to ensure mitochondrial function. Mitochondria acquire cholesterol through several pathways from different cellular pools.
