Maternal steroids during pregnancy and their associations with ambient air pollution and temperature during preconception and early gestational periods

open access: yesEnvironment International, 2022
Hormones play critical roles in facilitating pregnancy progression and the onset of parturition. Several classes of environmental contaminants, including fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and ambient temperature, have been shown to alter hormone ...

Metabolome Diversity Enhances Resistance of Intertidal Clams to Thermal Stress

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
Meretrix species are widely distributed intertidal bivalves in China with significant ecological and economic importance, which are sensitive to thermal stress. Our results showed that thermal environments of clam habitats shaped metabolome diversity, which can enhance the resistance of intertidal clams to thermal stress.

Gonadal Development–Related Genes and a Male‐Specific Genetic Marker Identified in the Endangered Sichuan Taimen (Hucho bleekeri)

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
Integrated transcriptomic and proteomic analyses were used to validate gonadal development–related genes and to identify a sex‐specific molecular marker in Hucho bleekeri. ABSTRACT Sex determination and differentiation represent fundamental topics in reproductive biology. Sichuan taimen (Hucho bleekeri), a first‐class national protected fish species in

The role of iron in normal and impaired testicular function

open access: yesAndrology, EarlyView.
Abstract Iron plays a critical role in testicular physiology, impacting spermatogenesis, testosterone production, and overall testicular function. Iron homeostasis is maintained through systemic and cellular regulatory mechanisms, including hepcidin‐mediated systemic iron control and the iron‐responsive element/iron regulatory protein (IRE/IRP) system ...

MLN64 mediates egress of cholesterol from endosomes to mitochondria in the absence of functional Niemann-Pick Type C1 protein

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 2010
Niemann-Pick Type C (NPC) disease is a fatal, neurodegenerative disorder, caused in most cases by mutations in the late endosomal protein NPC1. A hallmark of NPC disease is endosomal cholesterol accumulation and an impaired cholesterol homeostatic ...

The hypothalamic steroidogenic pathway mediates susceptibility to inflammation-evoked depression in female mice

open access: yesJournal of Neuroinflammation, 2023
Background Depression is two-to-three times more frequent among women. The hypothalamus, a sexually dimorphic area, has been implicated in the pathophysiology of depression.

Novel approaches for drug development against chronic primary pain: A systematic review

open access: yesBritish Journal of Pharmacology, EarlyView.
Abstract Chronic primary pain (CPP) persisting for more than 3 months, associated with significant emotional distress without any known underlying cause, is an unmet medical need. Traditional or adjuvant analgesics do not provide satisfactory pain relief for a great proportion of these patients.

Therapeutic potential of pregnenolone and pregnenolone methyl ether on depressive and CDKL5 deficiency disorders: Focus on microtubule targeting [PDF]

open access: yes, 2022
Pregnenolone methyl-ether (PME) is a synthetic derivative of the endogenous neuroactive steroid pregnenolone (PREG), which is an important modulator of several brain functions. In addition to being the precursor of steroids, PREG acts directly on various

In silico prediction of novel effective combinational treatment of chronic pain in individual patients: A joint white paper of the H2020 QSPainRelief consortium

open access: yesBritish Journal of Pharmacology, EarlyView.
Abstract Opioids are prescribed widely for chronic pain despite well‐recognised risks and variable long‐term benefit, reflecting the lack of effective alternatives for many patients. Combination therapies offer a promising strategy to enhance efficacy whilst reducing side effects.

Dependence of channel activation on voltage and pregnenolone sulfate concentration.

open access: yes, 2019
(A) Channel open probability was measured as a function of membrane potential. Cytoplasmic solutions contained 0.1 μM free Ca2+. The pipette contained pregnenolone sulfate (0 μM to 75 μM as indicated) dissolved in an external solution that also contained
