Maternal nutrition as a key determinant of placental and developing blood–brain barrier xenobiotic protective functions

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend Suboptimal maternal nutrition alters placental and developing blood–brain barrier (BBB) protective function and is associated with increased fetal brain vulnerability. In the placenta, nutritional adversity may reduce the exchange surface area and promote meta‐inflammation, compromising barrier efficiency in a model‐ and context ...

Pro-opiomelanocortin-Related Peptides, Prohormone Convertases 1 and 2 and the Regulatory Peptide 7B2 are Present in Melanosomes of Human Melanocytes

open access: yes, 2000
Recently, it has been shown that α-melanocyte stimulating hormone can directly activate tyrosinase by removing the allosteric regulator 6(R)-L-erythro 5,6,7,8 tetrahydrobiopterin resulting in a stable α-melanocyte stimulating hormone/6(R)-L-erythro 5,6,7,

POMC neurons in heat: A link between warm temperatures and appetite suppression. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS Biology, 2018
When core body temperature increases, appetite and food consumption decline. A higher core body temperature can occur during exercise, during exposure to warm environmental temperatures, or during a fever, yet the mechanisms that link relatively warm ...

Ovarian hormones and high‐fat diet duration distinctively modulate hypothalamic chemokine profile

open access: yesJournal of Neuroendocrinology, Volume 38, Issue 7, July 2026.
Abstract Excessive intake of saturated fats triggers inflammation in the hypothalamus, a key regulator of energy balance. In the chronic phase of this inflammatory response, bone marrow‐derived and lymphoid cells are chemoattracted to this region, partially mitigating high‐fat diet (HFD)‐induced metabolic impairments.

Multidisciplinary Therapy to Target Obesity and Its Complications in Adult Population: A Narrative Review

open access: yesObesity Reviews, Volume 27, Issue 7, July 2026.
ABSTRACT Obesity as a chronic and multifactorial disease requires a multidisciplinary team acting together in a holistic multitarget intervention. Multidisciplinary therapy targeting obesity and its complications includes physical exercise, nutritional, and behavior counseling.

Pro-opiomelanocortin mRNA and peptide co-expression in the developing rat pituitary [PDF]

open access: yes, 1991
Pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC) is synthesized in both the pituitary gland and the brain. Various peptide products of this precursor, namely beta-endorphin, ACTH and alpha-MSH are co-localized in the anterior lobe corticotrophs, all intermediate lobe cells ...

MicroRNAs are involved in the hypothalamic leptin sensitivity

open access: yesEpigenetics, 2018
The central nervous system monitors modifications in metabolic parameters or hormone levels (leptin) and elicits adaptive responses such as food intake and glucose homeostasis regulation. Particularly, within the hypothalamus, pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC)

ASIP Variants in Livestock: It's Not Black and White

open access: yesAnimal Genetics, Volume 57, Issue 3, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Fur and feather pigmentation play an important role in the survival and reproduction of many species, as well as in selective breeding and agriculture. The synthesis of pigment molecules, eumelanin and pheomelanin, is partially regulated by the agouti signalling protein (ASIP) encoded by the ASIP gene.

Gene expression and methylation profiles show the involvement of POMC in primary hyperparathyroidsm

open access: yesJournal of Translational Medicine, 2022
Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is mainly caused by parathyroid adenoma, which produces excess parathyroid hormones. Its pathogenic mechanisms have not yet been fully understood.

Hydroxy‐α‐Sanshools From Zanthoxylum bungeanum Maxim. Alleviate Obesity in Mice via the Regulation of Appetite and Gut Microbiota

open access: yesFood Science &Nutrition, Volume 14, Issue 6, June 2026.
Hydroxy‐alpha‐sanshool could modulate the expression of appetite‐related factors and the composition of intestinal microbiota in mice fed with a high‐fat diet by regulating food intake and maintaining energy homeostasis, which is consistent with the involvement of the gut‐brain axis in this regulatory mechanism.
