Inflammation-nutrition biomarker model for survival prediction in lung cancer patients with concurrent tuberculosis

open access: yesFrontiers in Molecular Biosciences
ObjectivesTo explore the prognostic value of eight inflammation-nutrition biomarkers in patients with lung cancer and tuberculosis as no multidimensional prognostic models for this comorbid population are available currently.MethodologyA retrospective ...

The planar cell polarity protein Vangl2 interacts with the PDZ‐domains of Scribble but not with a unique PDZ‐like domain in Inturned

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Structural and biochemical characterisations show that the planar cell polarity (PCP) protein Inturned harbours a unique PDZ‐like domain that does not bind canonical PDZ‐binding motifs (PBMs) like that of another PCP protein Vangl2. In contrast, the apical‐basal polarity protein Scribble contains four PDZ domains that bind Vangl2, but one PDZ domain ...

Building Cox-Type Structured Hazard Regression Models with Time-Varying Effects [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
In recent years, flexible hazard regression models based on penalised splines have been developed that allow us to extend the classical Cox-model via the inclusion of time-varying and nonparametric effects.

The suppressive role of GLS in radiosensitivity and irradiation-induced immune response in LUAD: integrating bioinformatics and experimental insights

open access: yesFrontiers in Immunology
BackgroundRadiotherapy elicits immune activation, thereby synergistically enhancing systemic tumor control when combined with immunotherapy. Glutaminase (GLS), a key enzyme for glutamine metabolism, has been found to regulate glutamine availability ...

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Prognostic factors for malignant mesothelioma in 142 patients : validation of CALGB and EORTC prognostic scoring systems

open access: yes, 2000
*This article is free to read on the publisher's website*\ud \ud Background \ud \ud The incidence of malignant mesothelioma is increasing. There is the perception that survival is worse in the UK than in other countries.

The impact of loco-regional recurrences on metastatic progression in early-stage breast cancer: a multistate model [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
To study whether the effects of prognostic factors associated with the occurrence of distant metastases (DM) at primary diagnosis change after the incidence of loco-regional recurrences (LRR) among women treated for invasive stage I or II breast cancer ...

The Impact of Tertiary Lymphoid Structures on Tumor Prognosis and the Immune Microenvironment in Colorectal Cancer

open access: yesBiomedicines
Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC) ranks as the third most common cancer worldwide. Tertiary lymphoid structures (TLSs), organized immune cell aggregates in non-lymphoid tissues, are linked to chronic inflammation and tumorigenesis. However, the precise
