Matrix proteoglycans as effector molecules for epithelial cell function

open access: yesEuropean Respiratory Review, 2005
Matrix proteoglycans are complex molecules composed of a core protein and glycosaminoglycan side chains. Once thought to be the molecular glue providing structural support and imparting biomechanical properties to lung tissue, it is now apparent that ...

Exploring AAV‐Mediated Gene Therapy for Inner Ear Diseases: from Preclinical Success to Clinical Potential

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Current preclinical studies of AAV‐mediated gene therapy explore different strategies based on the characteristics of inner ear diseases. For genetic hearing loss, approaches include the replacement of a “good gene,” removal of a “bad gene,” or direct correction of mutations through base editing.

Arterial smooth muscle cell proteoglycans synthesized in the presence of glucosamine demonstrate reduced binding to LDL1

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 2002
Atherosclerosis is the main cause of morbidity and mortality in diabetes, yet the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Retention of atherogenic lipoproteins by vascular proteoglycans is thought to play a key role in the development of atherosclerotic ...

Combined Chondroitinase and KLF7 Expression Reduce Net Retraction of Sensory and CST Axons from Sites of Spinal Injury [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Axon regeneration in the central nervous system is limited both by inhibitory extracellular cues and by an intrinsically low capacity for axon growth in some CNS populations.

EGR1 Promotes Craniofacial Bone Regeneration via Activation of ALPL⁺PDGFD⁺ Periosteal Stem Cells

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
ALPL+PDGFD+ (AP+) cells are distinct calvarial periosteal stem cells (PeSCs) with diminished postnatal activity. EGR1 drives PeSCs development via BMP signaling through its Znf2 domain and activates them via CTNNB1/WNT10B signaling through its Znf2/3 domains.

Structure, Mechanics, and Mechanobiology of Fibrocartilage Pericellular Matrix Mediated by Type V Collagen

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study defines the structure, mechanics, and mechanobiology of the fibrocartilage pericellular matrix (PCM) using the murine meniscus, showing how collagen V deficiency alters PCM properties and disrupts cell mechanosensitive signaling. Findings emphasize the critical role of PCM in fibrocartilage mechanobiology and suggest targeting it can enhance

Sugar Functionalized Collagen Material for Local Modulation of Innate Immunity

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Modulation of the innate immune response at the implant site can significantly influence adaptive immunity. A mannose‐functionalized collagen patch, termed the Local Immunotuning Patch (LIP), has been designed to engage mannose receptors on antigen‐presenting cells while exhibiting antibacterial properties. LIP orchestrates complex immune pathways that
