Wildlife as sentinels of compliance with law: An example with GPS‐tagged scavengers and sanitary regulations

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 60, Issue 10, Page 2188-2198, October 2023., 2023
GPS‐tagged scavengers allow the on‐ground monitoring of carcasses, the addressing of potential risks for wildlife, livestock and human health, the quantitative assessment of compliance with the law and would improve estimates of carcass availability, substantially contributing to more effective legislation enforcement.

Drone‐induced flight initiation distances for shorebirds in mixed‐species flocks

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 60, Issue 9, Page 1816-1827, September 2023., 2023
We conclude that (i) drone use needs to be carefully regulated to ensure roosting shorebird flocks are not approached within distances that will disturb the most sensitive species likely to be present, (ii) researchers contemplating drone surveys need to carefully evaluate the risk of disturbance, especially where there are mixed‐species flocks, and ...

An elevational gradient in floral traits and pollinator assemblages in the Neotropical species Costus guanaiensis var. tarmicus in Peru

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 13, Issue 8, August 2023., 2023
We analyzed floral traits and pollinator assemblages in the Neotropical species Costus guanaiensis var. tarmicus along a steep elevational gradient in Peru. Results show floral traits and pollinator assemblage variation along the elevational gradient. We examined our results considering two hypotheses: (1) local adaptation to different bee assemblages ...

A deep Generative Artificial Intelligence system to predict species coexistence patterns

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, Volume 13, Issue 5, Page 1052-1061, May 2022., 2022
Abstract Predicting coexistence patterns is a current challenge to understand diversity maintenance, especially in rich communities where these patterns' complexity is magnified through indirect interactions that prevent their approximation with classical experimental approaches.

Inactivating Food Microbes by High‐Pressure Processing and Combined Nonthermal and Thermal Treatment: A Review

open access: yesJournal of Food Quality, Volume 2022, Issue 1, 2022., 2022
High‐pressure processing (HPP) is a mild technology alternative to thermal pasteurization and sterilization of different food products. HPP has emerged to provide enormous benefits to consumers, i.e., mildly processed food and additive‐free food. It effectively retains bioactive compounds and extends the shelf life of food commodities by inactivating ...

The value and limitations of local ecological knowledge: Longitudinal and retrospective assessment of flagship species in Golfo Dulce, Costa Rica

open access: yesPeople and Nature, Volume 3, Issue 3, Page 627-638, June 2021., 2021
Abstract Anthropogenic activities and climate change are affecting marine ecosystems world‐wide, but systematic biodiversity assessments through periodic biomonitoring can be challenging and costly. Local ecological knowledge (LEK), obtained from experienced residents, can complement other approaches and provide improved understanding of the ...

Evaluating surrogates of genetic diversity for conservation planning

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 35, Issue 2, Page 634-642, April 2021., 2021
Abstract Protected‐area systems should conserve intraspecific genetic diversity. Because genetic data require resources to obtain, several approaches have been proposed for generating plans for protected‐area systems (prioritizations) when genetic data are not available. Yet such surrogate‐based approaches remain poorly tested.
