Cerebrovascular regulation during heat stress

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract Given that the brain is a highly metabolic organ and is enclosed by the skull, effective regulation of cerebral blood flow (CBF), not only for oxygen and nutrients supply but also as a means of convective heat exchange, is critical for preventing excessive elevations in brain temperature.

Canonical and non‐canonical functions of proteins regulating mitochondrial dynamics in mammalian physiology

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend Mitochondria are highly dynamic organelles that continuously remodel their architecture through coordinated cycles of fusion and fission. This review examines the four key GTPases that orchestrate mitochondrial dynamics in mammals: MFN1, MFN2, OPA1, and DRP1.

Mild Cerebellar Neurodegeneration of Aged Heterozygous PCD Mice Increases Cell Fusion of Purkinje and Bone Marrow-Derived Cells

open access: yesCell Transplantation, 2012
Bone marrow-derived cells have different plastic properties, especially regarding cell fusion, which increases with time and is prompted by tissue injury.

An eikonal model with re‐excitability for fast simulations in cardiac electrophysiology

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend Restitution properties obtained from cable‐equation simulations and anisotropic remeshing informed by local fibre orientation are combined in an eikonal model with re‐excitability. The resulting reduced electrophysiology model enables efficient simulations of recurrent activation patterns, here illustrated by atrial re‐entry ...

Differentiation of human induced pluripotent stem cells to Purkinje neurons

open access: yes, 2015
<p>This protocol describes how to differentiate human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) to Purkinje cells. Human iPSCs are first differentiated to Neph3+ Purkinje progenitors.

Caenorhabditis elegans as an in vivo model system for human inherited primary arrhythmia syndromes

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend Most genes involved in inherited primary arrhythmia syndromes (IPAS) are conserved in Caenorhabditis elegans, where genetic manipulation enables functional characterization of variants, identification of regulatory proteins, and in vivo drug testing.

Extracellular ionic concentration modulates arrhythmias in a simulated population of human ventricular myocytes with long QT syndrome type 3

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend Schematic illustrating the in silico study pipeline. A total of 50,000 virtual myocytes were generated, which were then filtered to 7093 myocytes that fit experimentally constrained biomarkers for physiological electrical and calcium behaviour under wild‐type conditions.

Panoramic voltage‐sensitive optical mapping of contracting hearts using cooperative multiview motion tracking with 12 cameras

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstact figure legend A panoramic 3D optical mapping system was developed, enabling imaging of action potential waves across the entire strongly deforming ventricular surface of beating isolated hearts. The system comprises 12 high‐speed cameras and a soccerball‐shaped imaging chamber with 48 light‐emitting diodes (LEDs).

Development of adenosine signalling in the cerebellum [PDF]

open access: yes
The release and clearance of adenosine are reasonably well-documented in the mature CNS but relatively little is known about how adenosine signalling changes during postnatal development.
