After peripheral nerve injuries, Wallerian degeneration starts with a stereotypic fragmentation of myelin sheath into myelin ovoids, which occur near Schmidt-Lantermann incisures (SLI). This demyelination process requires a dramatic change in cytoskeletal structures in Schwann cells.
