Regional patterns of global industrial energy demands as a foundation for modelling decarbonization pathways

open access: yesScientific Data
Decarbonisation of the industry sector is particularly challenging given its huge energy demand and high complexity of its various production processes. Additionally, regional differences in energy demand patterns affect the possible transition pathways.

ShearLab: A Rational Design of a Digital Parabolic Scaling Algorithm [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Multivariate problems are typically governed by anisotropic features such as edges in images. A common bracket of most of the various directional representation systems which have been proposed to deliver sparse approximations of such features is the ...

Rational material design of mixed-valent high T$_c$ superconductors

open access: yes, 2013
We design, from first principles calculations, a novel family of thallium halide-based compounds as candidates for new high temperature superconductors, whose superconductivity is mediated by the recently proposed mechanism of non-local correlation ...

Developments in the tools and methodologies of synthetic biology. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Synthetic biology is principally concerned with the rational design and engineering of biologically based parts, devices, or systems. However, biological systems are generally complex and unpredictable, and are therefore, intrinsically difficult to ...

Phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinase as a target of pathogens—friend or foe?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This graphical summary illustrates the roles of phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinases (PI4Ks). PI4Ks regulate key cellular processes and can be hijacked by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, to support their intracellular replication. Their dual role as essential host enzymes and pathogen cofactors makes them promising drug targets.

Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...

A methionine‐lined active site governs carbocation stabilization and product specificity in a bacterial terpene synthase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals a unique active site enriched in methionine residues and demonstrates that these residues play a critical role by stabilizing carbocation intermediates through novel sulfur–cation interactions. Structure‐guided mutagenesis further revealed variants with significantly altered product profiles, enhancing pseudopterosin formation. These
