New source material for red beet breeding

Red beet pigments as soft drink colorants
Food / Nahrung, 1985AbstractRed beet pigments were used, in the form of industrially produced concentrate, as a soft drink colorant instead of food dyestuffs. On the basis of sensoric analysis, optimal composition of fruit type soft drink was suggested. Beet concentrate in the concentration used (2.5 g per 100 g of drink) did influence neither taste nor flavour of drink ...

Anticancer Effects of Red Beet Pigments
2012Currently, there is considerable interest in the anticancer effects of red beetroot (Beta vulgaris L.) pigment extract, which is used worldwide as red food color E162 and as a natural colorant in cosmetics and drugs. Of particular significance is its broad spectrum of multi-organ antitumor activity demonstrable in laboratory animal models.

Studies on silvering disease of red beet
Annals of Applied Biology, 1961SUMMARYObservations and experiments were made on silvering disease of red beet during the period 1952–59. The disease is most prevalent on seed crops of the variety Cheltenham Green Top, but also affects other cultivars of Beta vulgaris, often only mildly. The causal organism is Corynebacterium betae sp.nov.

Modeling of Sequential Batch Ultrafiltration of Red Beet Extract
Journal of Food Science, 1988ABSTRACT Sequential batch ultrafiltration of red beet extract was studied by employing membranes of decreasing molecular weight cut‐off in sequence. A mathematical model was developed after considering the series of resistances of the polarized layer and the membrane, but not polymer solution interaction.

ATP-induced sucrose efflux from red-beet tonoplast vesicles
Planta, 2000Sucrose efflux from the vacuole of mobilizing red-beet (Beta vulgaris L.) hypocotyl cells was investigated using purified tonoplast vesicles. Tonoplast vesicle purity was assured by the immunoreactivity to antibodies raised against the vacuolar ATPase and by the strong inhibition exhibited by the H+-ATPase to bafilomycin-A and NO3-. Inhibition of the H+

Stability of Betalain Pigments of Red Beet
2012Although pigments of biological origin are intensely researched for their market potentials and health benefits, their stability, from the maturity status of the source material to their processing and products into which the pigments are incorporated and the storage of those products, is shrouded with many problems.
