Jahn-Teller instability in C6H6+ and C6H6- revisited

open access: yes, 2003
The benzene cation (C6H6+) has a doublet (e_{1g}) ground state in hexagonal ring (D_{6h}) geometry. Therefore a Jahn-Teller (JT) distortion will lower the energy.

On-Line Monitoring of Biofilm Accumulation on Graphite-Polypropylene Electrode Material Using a Heat Transfer Sensor

open access: yesBiosensors, 2021
Biofilms growing on electrodes are the heart piece of bioelectrochemical systems (BES). Moreover, the biofilm morphology is key for the efficient performance of BES and must be monitored and controlled for a stable operation.

Lithiation of 4-membered heterocycles as useful strategy for the preparation of new molecular scaffolds: addressing the regioselectivity in azetidines and thietanes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Four-membered heterocycles (4-MH) with one or two heteroatoms are of great importance in medicinal chemistry and synthetic organic chemistry. This kind of scaffolds show peculiar structural features, related to the ring “puckering”, and biological ...

Plasmodium falciparum gametogenesis essential protein 1 (GEP1) is a transmission‐blocking target

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study shows Plasmodium falciparum GEP1 is vital for activating sexual stages of malarial parasites even independently of a mosquito factor. Knockout parasites completely fail gamete formation even when a phosphodiesterase inhibitor is added. Two single‐nucleotide polymorphisms (V241L and S263P) are found in 12%–20% of field samples.

Label‐Free Fluorescent Kinase and Phosphatase Enzyme Assays with Supramolecular Host‐Dye Pairs

open access: yesChemistryOpen, 2019
The combination of the macrocyclic hosts p‐sulfonatocalix[4]arene and cucurbit[7]uril with the fluorescent dyes lucigenin and berberine affords two label‐free enzyme assays for the detection of kinase and phosphatase activity by fluorescence monitoring ...

DNA Damaging Agents in Chemical Biology and Cancer

open access: yesCHIMIA, 2020
Despite their toxicity, DNA alkylating drugs remain a cornerstone of anticancer therapy. The classical thinking was that rapidly dividing tumour cells left more of its DNA in an exposed single-stranded state, making these rapidly dividing cells more ...

A sensitive and selective chemiluminogenic probe for palladium [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Palladium triggered removal of a propargyl group leads to the cleavage of the 1,2-dioxetane ring, leading to bright chemiluminescence. The reaction of the probe is highly specific for the Pd species, thus the probe described here has considerable ...

4‐nitrobenzoate inhibits 4‐hydroxybenzoate polyprenyltransferase in malaria parasites and enhances atovaquone efficacy

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Atovaquone is an antimalarial requiring potentiation for sufficient efficacy. We pursued strategies to enhance its activity, showing that 4‐nitrobenzoate inhibits 4‐hydroxybenzoate polyprenyltransferase, decreasing ubiquinone biosynthesis. Since atovaquone competes with ubiquinol in mitochondria, 4‐nitrobenzoate facilitates its action, potentiating ...

Molecular gas chemistry in AGN. II. High-resolution imaging of SiO emission in NGC1068: shocks or XDR? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
This paper is part of a multi-species survey of line emission from the molecular gas in the circum-nuclear disk (CND) of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC1068. Single-dish observations have provided evidence that the abundance of silicon monoxide(SiO) in the CND ...
