The cosmological model of eternal inflation and the transition from chance to biological evolution in the history of life

open access: yesBiology Direct, 2007
Background Recent developments in cosmology radically change the conception of the universe as well as the very notions of "probable" and "possible". The model of eternal inflation implies that all macroscopic histories permitted by laws of physics are ...

Random matrix analysis for gene interaction networks in cancer cells [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Investigations of topological uniqueness of gene interaction networks in cancer cells are essential for understanding this disease. Based on the random matrix theory, we study the distribution of the nearest neighbor level spacings $P(s)$ of interaction ...

Aggressive prostate cancer is associated with pericyte dysfunction

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Tumor‐produced TGF‐β drives pericyte dysfunction in prostate cancer. This dysfunction is characterized by downregulation of some canonical pericyte markers (i.e., DES, CSPG4, and ACTA2) while maintaining the expression of others (i.e., PDGFRB, NOTCH3, and RGS5).

The evolution and functional repertoire of translation proteins following the origin of life

open access: yesBiology Direct, 2010
Background The RNA world hypothesis posits that the earliest genetic system consisted of informational RNA molecules that directed the synthesis of modestly functional RNA molecules.

From Cosmos to Intelligent Life: The Four Ages of Astrobiology

open access: yes, 2012
The history of life on Earth and in other potential life-bearing planetary platforms is deeply linked to the history of the universe. Since life as we know it relies on chemical elements forged in dying heavy stars, the universe needs to be old enough ...

HDV can constrain HBV genetic evolution in hbsag: Implications for the identification of innovative pharmacological targets [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Chronic HBV + HDV infection is associated with greater risk of liver fibrosis, earlier hepatic decompensation, and liver cirrhosis hepatocellular carcinoma compared to HBV mono-infection.

Glycosylated LGALS3BP is highly secreted by bladder cancer cells and represents a novel urinary disease biomarker

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Urinary LGALS3BP is elevated in bladder cancer patients compared to healthy controls as detected by the 1959 antibody–based ELISA. The antibody shows enhanced reactivity to the high‐mannose glycosylated variant secreted by cancer cells treated with kifunensine (KIF).

Mini-ribozymes and freezing environment: a new scenario for the early RNA world

open access: yes, 2005
International audienceThe RNA World hypothesis states that the present-day life, which is based on DNA genomes and protein enzymes, was preceded by a simpler life form based primarily on RNA.

Survivin and Aurora Kinase A control cell fate decisions during mitosis

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Aurora A interacts with survivin during mitosis and regulates its centromeric role. Loss of Aurora A activity mislocalises survivin, the CPC and BubR1, leading to disruption of the spindle checkpoint and triggering premature mitotic exit, which we refer to as ‘mitotic slippage’.
