P1 phagemid-based delivery of Cas9 antimicrobial into Shigella flexneri [PDF]

open access: yes, 2022
A bacteriophage P1 phagemid system allowed efficient packaging of a DNA-sequence specific, Cas9 antimicrobial into transducing particles, which could be used to infect and kill pathogenic bacteria, such as Shigella flexneri. Although the transduction

Clonal serotype 1c multidrug-resistant Shigella flexneri detected in multiple institutions by sentinel-site sequencing

open access: yesFrontiers in Medicine, 2022
Shigella flexneri is a major diarrhoeal pathogen, and the emergence of multidrug-resistant S. flexneri is of public health concern. We report the detection of a clonal cluster of multidrug-resistant serotype 1c (7a) S. flexneri in Singapore in April 2022.

P1 Bacteriophage-Enabled Delivery of CRISPR-Cas9 Antimicrobial Activity Against Shigella flexneri [PDF]

open access: yes, 2023
The discovery of clustered, regularly interspaced, short palindromic repeats (CRISPR) and the Cas9 RNA-guided nuclease provides unprecedented opportunities to selectively kill specific populations or species of bacteria.

Antimicrobial and Nutritional Properties of Edible Oyster Mushroom (<i>Pleurotus ostreatus</i>) Extracts Against Foodborne Pathogens Relevant to Maternal and Child Malnutrition in Africa. [PDF]

open access: yesFood Sci Nutr
Somali Pleurotus ostreatus was extracted with water and ethanol and evaluated for nutrition, antibacterial activity, GC–MS profile, and molecular docking. The mushroom was rich in protein, fiber, iron, and zinc, while the ethanolic extract showed stronger moderate in vitro inhibition of selected foodborne pathogens than the aqueous extract.

GROWTH, SURVIVAL AND ADAPTATION OF Shigella flexneri UNDER ACIDIC CONDITIONS RELEVANT TO THOSE APPLIED DURING DAIRY PROCESSING [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Food and Dairy Sciences, 2013
Shigella flexneri is an important fooborne pathogen that has been associated with dairy products. This study aimed to assess the growth, survival and adaptation of S. flexneri under acidic conditions relevant to those adopted in dairy processing.

The Chemical Structure Properties and Promoting Biofilm Activity of Exopolysaccharide Produced by Shigella flexneri

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2022
Shigella flexneri is a waterborne and foodborne pathogen that can damage human health. The exopolysaccharides (S-EPS) produced by S. flexneri CMCC51574 were found to promote biofilm formation and virulence. In this research, the crude S-EPS produced by S.

The effect of the potential PhoQ histidine kinase inhibitors on Shigella flexneri virulence. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2011
PhoQ/PhoP is an important two-component system that regulates Shigella virulence. We explored whether the PhoQ/PhoP system is a promising target for new antibiotics against S. flexneri infection.

Identification of a putative pathogenicity island in Shigella flexneri using subtractive hybridisation of the S. flexneri and Escherichia coli genomes [PDF]

open access: yesFEMS Microbiology Letters, 2002
The genetic differences between the human pathogen, Shigella flexneri, and the non-pathogenic Escherichia coli were investigated in an attempt to identify pathogenicity islands (PAIs) in the S. flexneri genome. Genomic subtraction identified a large unique region of DNA which was present in S. flexneri serotype 2a but absent from E. coli K-12.

Capsaicin Inhibits Shigella flexneri Intracellular Growth by Inducing Autophagy

open access: yesFrontiers in Pharmacology, 2022
Antibiotic treatment plays an essential role in preventing Shigella infection. However, incidences of global rise in antibiotic resistance create a major challenge to treat bacterial infection.

Evolutionary and genomic insights into the long-term colonization of Shigella flexneri in animals

open access: yesEmerging Microbes and Infections, 2022
The enteroinvasive bacterium Shigella flexneri is known as a highly host-adapted human pathogen. There had been no known other reservoirs reported until recently. Here 34 isolates obtained from animals (yaks, dairy cows and beef cattle) from 2016 to 2017
