Self-effective scientific reasoning? Differences between elementary and secondary school students

open access: yesFrontline Learning Research, 2022
Although scientific reasoning is not a formal, independent school subject, it is an increasingly important skill, especially for student learning in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) subjects.

Salmonella lipopolysaccharide‐containing supported lipid bilayers as platforms to study bacteriophage interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present robust protocols for the preparation of supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) incorporating either Salmonella smooth LPS or outer membrane vesicles (OMVs). We use a combination of quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM‐D) and fluorescence microscopy to both characterize the SLBs of various compositions and to probe their interactions ...

Microbiome−host proteostasis crosstalk—An emerging perspective on mechanisms and interventions toward healthy longevity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Proteostasis and the gut microbiota play a key role in shaping host physiology. Microbiota‐derived metabolites, vitamins, and RNA modulate host proteostasis. Findings from model systems, including C. elegans, indicate microbes can either stabilize or disrupt host proteostasis.

Emerging infectious diseases: coping with uncertainty

open access: yes, 2009
The world’s scientific community must be in a state of constant readiness to address the threat posed by newly emerging infectious diseases. Whether the disease in question is SARS in humans or BSE in animals, scientists must be able to put into action ...

Truth and beauty in scientific reason

open access: yesSynthese, 1989
A rationalist and realist model of scientific revolutions will be constructed by reference to two categories of criteria of theory-evaluation, denominated indicators of truth and of beauty. Whereas indicators of truth are formulateda priori and thus unite science in the pursuit of verisimilitude, aesthetic criteria are inductive constructs which lag ...

From mice to humans—divergent strategies for intestinal homeostasis and regeneration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Recent advances such as organoid genome editing, xenotransplantation, imaging, and whole‐genome sequencing have enabled direct studies of human intestinal stem cells (ISCs). These studies reveal species‐specific features, including slower ISC proliferation, distinct injury responses, slower somatic mutation accumulation in humans, and an inverse ...

Why Gender is a Relevant Factor in the Social Epistemology of Scientific Inquiry [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
In recent years, feminist philosophy of science has been subjected to criticism. Much of the debate has focused on the implications of the underdetermination thesis for accounts of the role of social values in scientific reasoning.

Children's application of simultaneous and successive processing in inductive and deductive reasoning problems : implications for developing scientific reasoning skills

open access: yes, 1995
The research reported in this paper was undertaken to obtain a better understanding of problem solving and scientific reasoning in 10-year-old children. The study involved measuring children's competence at syllogistic reasoning and in solving a series ...

Dimethyl fumarate combined with cisplatin at subcytotoxic doses sensitizes cervical cancer toward ferroptosis and apoptosis through GSH restriction and p53 (re)activation

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Dimethyl fumarate (DMF) reduces growth of HPV‐positive cervical cancer spheroids and induces ferroptosis in cervical cancer cells via blocking SLC7A11/Glutathione (GSH) axis. Combination of subcytotoxic doses of DMF and cisplatin (CDDP) further suppresses spheroid growth and drives cell death in 2D culture models.

Latent profile analysis of schizotypy, autistic traits and conspiracy theory beliefs: Associations with cognitive flexibility and scientific reasoning performance

open access: yesJournal of Experimental Psychopathology, 2022
Schizotypal and autistic traits have both been implicated in the development of conspiracy theory (CT) beliefs. However, there are both similarities and differences between these traits that may increase an individual’s susceptibility to CT beliefs. Past
