Biopsy confirmation of metastatic sites in breast cancer patients:clinical impact and future perspectives [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Determination of hormone receptor (estrogen receptor and progesterone receptor) and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 status in the primary tumor is clinically relevant to define breast cancer subtypes, clinical outcome, and the choice of therapy.

Synchronous Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Hypopharynx and Adenocarcinoma of the Lung: A Report of Two Cases Treated with Definitive Radiotherapy

open access: yesJournal of Radiation and Cancer Research
Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma with second primary lung adenocarcinoma is relatively rare. Because of the rarity of such a clinical scenario, there is no standard guideline on the treatment protocol for such patients. Here, we present two cases of

RNA‐related functions of BRCA2 in transcription, replication, and genome stability

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Beyond its role in homologous recombination, BRCA2 regulates R‐loop homeostasis, DNA–RNA hybrid resolution, RNA polymerase II dynamics, and transcriptional activation. Disruption of any of these functions can contribute to genome instability, inflammatory signaling, and tumorigenesis. BRCA2 is a central tumor suppressor protein best known for its roles

The heterodimeric amino acid transporters (HAT) of the SLC7/SLC3 family: A structure−function relationships and relevance to human pathology

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Heterodimeric amino acid transporters consist of SLC7 and SLC3 family proteins arranged in a conserved structural organization. They regulate nutrient transport across cell membranes, supporting essential cellular functions. These transporters also contribute to xenobiotic/drug uptake and distribution.

Cancer Trends: Cancer of the pancreas

open access: yes, 2012
Cancer of the pancreas accounts for approximately 2.5% of all invasive cancers and is the 9th most commonly diagnosed cancer in Ireland.1 Almost 400 cases of pancreatic cancer were diagnosed annually between 1994 and 2010 (Table 1).

Second-Generation HSP90 Inhibitor Onalespib Blocks mRNA Splicing of Androgen Receptor Variant 7 in Prostate Cancer Cells.

open access: yes, 2016
Resistance to available hormone therapies in prostate cancer has been associated with alternative splicing of androgen receptor (AR) and specifically, the expression of truncated and constitutively active AR variant 7 (AR-V7).

A context‐dependent modulatory role for eIF6 in acquired resistance to vemurafenib in melanoma

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Acquired resistance to vemurafenib upregulates the translation factor eIF6 in melanoma cells. Silencing eIF6 in resistant cells reduces proliferation and partially restores drug sensitivity, whereas its overexpression increases sensitivity across melanoma lines regardless of BRAF status, via modulation of mTOR, S6K, and MAPK signaling.

Cancer Trends: Childhood cancer

open access: yes, 2017
This is the second trends report NCRI has published on childhood cancers, updating a previous report covering 1994-20111. To facilitate summary of the amount and complexity of material included, presentation and layout has been in general retained from ...

Metastatic niche shaped by host factors influences disseminated cancer cell fate

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Metastasis is shaped not only by cancer cells but also by the environments they encounter. This review explores how factors such as aging, diet, the microbiome, lifestyle, and environmental exposures remodel organ‐specific niches in the lung, liver, bone, and brain, influencing where metastatic cells survive, remain dormant, or grow, and ultimately ...

Young patients with colorectal cancer have increased risk of second primary cancers

open access: yes, 2017
Objective: Because the number of long-term survivors of colorectal cancer has increased, second primary cancer has become an important issue. However, previous studies were heterogeneous in design, and few data for Asia-Pacific area were available ...
