Oxidative stress is one of the factors involved in the pathogenesis of several neurodegenerative diseases. It has been reported that a secretory phospholipase A2 known as A2-EPTX-NSm1a has lower cytotoxicity in neuronal cells compared to its crude Naja ...

Vascular smooth muscle cell mechanotransduction: Pathways, phenotypes and emerging technologies
Abstract figure legend Vascular smooth muscle cells are exposed to mechanical stimuli from the blood flow and the extracellular matrix. The cells sense the signals from cyclic stretch, shear stress, hydrostatic pressure and matrix stiffness through specialized mechanosensors, such as mechanosensitive ion channels or cell surface receptors including ...

Krabbe disease: psychosine-mediated activation of phospholipase A2 in oligodendrocyte cell death
Globoid cell leukodystrophy (Krabbe disease) is an inherited neurological disorder caused by the pathogenomic accumulation of psychosine (galactosylsphingosine), a substrate for the deficient enzyme galactocerebroside β-galactosidase.

ABSTRACT Background Secretory phospholipase A2 (sPLA2) is an inflammatory mediator linked to acute chest syndrome (ACS) in sickle cell disease (SCD), a serious complication that can develop during an acute vaso‐occlusive pain episode (VOE). Plasma sPLA2 levels have been proposed as a potential biomarker for predicting ACS onset.

ABSTRACT The peripheral nervous system (PNS) is responsible for innervating all regions of the body outside of the central nervous system (CNS), the latter consisting of the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves. While myelin is an essential component for the efficient functioning of both CNS and peripheral nerve cells, it is particularly important for ...

Modeling the hydrolyzing action of secretory phospholipase A2 with ordinary differential equations and Monte Carlo Methods [PDF]
Although cell membranes normally resist the hydrolysis of secretory phospholipase A2, a series of current investigations demonstrated that the changes in lipid order caused by increased calcium has a relationship with the susceptibility to phospholipase ...

Abstract Since 1858, human atherosclerotic plaques have been shown to contain immune cells. But are these cells suitable therapeutic targets? Dozens of clinical trials of anti‐inflammatory agents other than colchicine have been performed in patients with clinically evident atherosclerosis.

Structure and Catalytic Mechanism of Secretory Phospholipases A2
Publisher Summary This chapter focuses on the aspects of phospholipases A 2 (sPLA 2 ) structure that are of particular relevance to catalysis. A formal reaction pathway based largely on high-resolution structure analysis of crystalline complexes of secretory phospholipids (sPLA 2 s) with a transition-state analog is proposed.
