Serotonin Agonists and Antagonists in Experimental Hypertension

Journal of Cardiovascular Pharmacology, 1987
Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine; also called 5-HT) modifies cardiovascular activity by central as well as peripheral sites of action. When 5-HT is injected within the central nervous system, depending upon the dose and site of administration, either a pressor or a depressor effect is observed.

Serotonin Antagonists as Antipsychotics

1993
Recent evidence has indicated that antagonism of serotonin receptor subtypes may, in part, be responsible for the atypical profile of some antipsychotic drugs. In the past, our lab has investigated the neurobiology of the tridecapeptide neurotransmitter neurotensin (NT).

Treatment of "Dumping with Serotonin Antagonists

JAMA, 1962
RECENT STUDIES in our laboratories have shown that a circulating agent of intestinal origin may be responsible for initiating the early symptomatic phase of the postgastrectomy dumping syndrome. Since serotonin and related substances have pharmacologie actions compatible with the physiologic derangements seen in dumping, and are released from the upper

Trazodone, a central serotonin antagonist and agonist

Journal of Neural Transmission, 1979
We examined the effect of trazodone (TR), a non-tricyclic antidepressant drug with an unknown mechanism of action, as well as its supposed metabolites beta-(3-oxo-s-triazolo-[4, 3 a]-pyridin-2-yl-propionic acid (OTPA) and 1-(m-chlorophenyl)-piperazine (CPP) on the serotonin (5-HT) -system in a model of the hind limb flexor reflex of the spinal rat ...

Granisetron: The Second Serotonin-Receptor Antagonist

Annals of Pharmacotherapy, 1995
Objective: To review the pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, clinical efficacy, and adverse effects of granisetron, focusing on critical analysis of published clinical trials and comparison with other antiemetic agents, including ondansetron. Data Sources:

Restoration of Pulmonary Perfusion by a Serotonin Antagonist

Angiology, 1981
R 41 468, a selective serotonin receptor blocking agent, was found to improve pulmonary perfusion in patients with venous air embolism, in patients with adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), and in certain cases of impairment of the pulmonary circulation during prolonged major surgery accompanied by blood transfusion.

The use of serotonin antagonists in postgastrectomy syndromes

The American Journal of Surgery, 1965
Summary Experimental and clinical studies are presented to substantiate the role of serotonin in initiating the “dumping syndrome.” The beneficial effects of a serotonin-inhibitor in the treatment of this postgastrectomy problem as well as in two cases of postvagotomy diarrhea are outlined and discussed.

Influence of serotonin antagonists on bulbospinal systems

Brain Research, 1973
Abstract We attempted to elucidate the function of the serotonin-containing bulbospinal neurons by directly stimulating the raphe nucleus of unanesthetized decerebrates cats. Such stimuli evoked both a dorsal and a ventral root potential, and produced a complex time-dependent facilitation and inhibition of segmentally evoked monosynaptic reflexes ...

Hyperglycemic properties of serotonin receptor antagonists

Life Sciences, 1991
Several serotonin (5-HT) receptor antagonists with varying specificities for the 5-HT receptor types, were studied with regard to their effects on blood glucose levels in mice. The non-selective antagonists, metergoline and methysergide, proved to be hyperglycemic at doses commonly used to antagonize 5-HT receptors. In contrast, ritanserin (a 5-HT2 and

The effect of serotonin and serotonin antagonists on bladder cancer cell proliferation

BJU International, 2006
OBJECTIVE To investigate the role of serotonin (5‐hydroxytryptamine, 5HT) and its antagonists in the proliferation of high‐grade bladder cancer cells (HT1376), as high‐grade bladder cancer has a rapid rate of progression, invasion and recurrence, and 5HT antagonists inhibit the growth of the prostate cancer cell
