Chemoenzymatic Synthesis of Well‐Defined α(2,8)‐ and α(2,9)‐Linked Oligosialosides

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, Volume 138, Issue 36, 1 September 2026.
Well‐defined α(2,8)‐ and α(2,9)‐linked oligosialic acids of different lengths can be prepared by employing recombinant bacterial polysialyltransferases in combination with chemically modified CMP‐Neu5Ac derivatives. After transfer, a sialoside is formed bearing an artificial entity, which blocks further glycosylation.

Determinants of Immunoglobulin‐G N‐Glycan Patterns in the Aging General Population

open access: yesAllergy, EarlyView.
The effect of demographic and lifestyle factors on IgG N‐glycosylation, which determines IgG's inflammatory response, remains poorly characterized. Aging, higher BMI, female sex, smoking, and heavy alcohol consumption are determinants of IgG N‐glycome patterns, which are indicative of inflammation. Women exhibit a distinct change in IgG N‐glycosylation

The Role of Sialyl-Tn in Cancer [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal of Molecular Sciences, 2016
Activation of an aberrant glycosylation pathway in cancer cells can lead to expression of the onco-foetal sialyl-Tn (sTn) antigen. STn is a truncated O-glycan containing a sialic acid α-2,6 linked to GalNAc α-O-Ser/Thr and is associated with an adverse outcome and poor prognosis in cancer patients. The biosynthesis of the sTn antigen has been linked to

Aberrant sialylation in ovarian cancers

open access: yesJournal of the Chinese Medical Association, 2020
Sialylation (the covalent addition of sialic acid to the terminal end of glycoproteins or glycans), tightly regulated cell- and microenvironment-specific process and orchestrated by sialyltransferases and sialidases (neuraminidases) family, is one of the posttranslational modifications, which plays an important biological role in the maintenance of ...

α2,6 Sialylation mediated by ST6GAL1 promotes glioblastoma growth

open access: yesJCI Insight, 2022
One of the least-investigated areas of brain pathology research is glycosylation, which is a critical regulator of cell surface protein structure and function.

Diet–Microbiome–Immune Interactions at the Gut Mucosa in Food Allergy: Mechanisms, Gaps, and Therapeutic Implications

open access: yesAllergy, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Mucosal surfaces are sites of highly dynamic interactions among epithelial and immune cells, environmental exposures, particularly dietary inputs, and the diverse microbial communities and their metabolites. These elements continually influence each other to maintain homeostasis and ensure appropriate immune discrimination between pathogens ...

Inhibition of poly-LacNAc biosynthesis with release of CMP-Neu5Ac feedback inhibition increases the sialylation of recombinant EPO produced in CHO cells

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2018
Sialylation of recombinant therapeutic glycoproteins modulates their pharmacokinetic properties by affecting their in vivo half-life. N-glycan branching on glycoproteins increases the number of potential attachment sites for sialic acid.

Serum Agalactosyl IgG Predicts Hepatocellular Carcinoma and All‐Cause Mortality After SVR in Advanced Chronic Hepatitis C

open access: yesHepatology Research, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background and Aims Patients with chronic hepatitis C and advanced fibrosis remain at substantial risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and non‐liver–related death even after sustained virological response (SVR) to direct‐acting antivirals (DAA).

Reducing sialylation in melanoma increases classical pathway-mediated complement activation

open access: yesiScience
Summary: Strategies to reduce tumor sialylation have progressed to clinical trials, as they improved anti-tumor cellular responses in pre-clinical models.

Glycoengineered Recombinant Alpha1‐Antitrypsin Results in Comparable In Vitro and In Vivo Activities to Human Plasma‐Derived Protein

open access: yesBiotechnology and Bioengineering, Volume 123, Issue 10, Page 2605-2612, October 2026.
ABSTRACT Alpha‐1‐antitrypsin (A1AT) is a multifunctional, clinically important, high‐value therapeutic glycoprotein that can be used for the treatment of many diseases, such as A1AT deficiency, diabetes, graft‐versus‐host disease, cystic fibrosis, and various viral infections. Currently, the only U.S. food and drug administration‐approved treatment for
