Low cholesterol levels are good markers for central hypothyroidism in case with dialysis using roxadustat

open access: yesClinical Case Reports, Volume 12, Issue 9, September 2024.
Key Clinical Message Recently, hypoxia‐inducible factor prolyl hydroxylase (HIF‐PH) inhibitors have been used for renal anemia, but side effects have also been reported. We report on the association of central hypothyroidism and cholesterol with roxadustat.

Proteomic exploration of potential blood biomarkers in haemophilic arthropathy

open access: yesHealth Science Reports, Volume 7, Issue 9, September 2024.
Abstract Background and Aims The pathophysiology of haemophilic arthropathy (HA) is complex and largely undefined. Proteomic analyses provide insights into the intricate mechanisms of the HA. Our study aimed to identify differentially expressed proteins in relation to the severity of HA, explore their pathophysiological roles, and evaluate their ...

Scale‐Dependent Rheology of Synovial Fluid Lubricating Macromolecules

open access: yesSmall, Volume 20, Issue 21, May 23, 2024.
A multiscale methodology using optical tweezers is developed to examine the interactions between hyaluronic acid (HA) and proteoglycan‐4 (PRG4/lubricin), which are major lubricating biomolecules of synovial fluid in the joints. For the first time, the length scale dependent structure and rheology in solution are characterized, providing a framework for

Proteoglycan 4 (PRG4) treatment improves skin wound healing in a porcine model

open access: yesThe FASEB Journal, Volume 38, Issue 6, 31 March 2024.
Proteoglycan 4 (PRG4) is commonly found in synovial fluid of the articular joint and serves as a boundary lubricant of articular cartilage. Interestingly, we show that human recombinant proteoglycan 4 (rhPRG4) improves healing of porcine full‐thickness skin injuries. rhPRG4 treatment decreases fibrosis, increases vascularization, and retains adipocytes

Advances in the Use of Biologics and Biomaterials toward the Improvement of Pancreatic Islet Graft Survival in Type 1 Diabetes

open access: yesAdvanced NanoBiomed Research, Volume 4, Issue 3, March 2024.
Although islet transplantation has the potential to serve as a curative treatment for type 1 diabetes, there are many hurdles to achieving long‐term islet graft survival. This review discusses the recent advances in strategies to improve islet survival function using exogenous compounds and conformal coatings as a promising tool for improving islet ...

The biophysical and compositional properties of human basement membranes

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, Volume 291, Issue 3, Page 477-488, February 2024.
Basement membranes are exceptionally adaptable materials with both extremely stiff and highly elastic properties. This article highlights these features on a selection of human membranes and links them to compositional, biomechanical, and structural profiles down to a molecular level. The role of water in modulating these attributes is also scrutinized

A hundred years of the hepatotrophic controversy. [PDF]

open access: yes, 1977
Venous blood returning from the splanchnic viscera has liver-supporting (hepatotrophic) qualities not found to the same degree in other kinds of arterial or venous blood.

Quantification of insulin‐like growth factor‐I by liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry

open access: yesRapid Communications in Mass Spectrometry, Volume 38, Issue S1, January 2024.
We describe three methods of sample preparation for the liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometric measurement of insulin‐like growth factor‐I concentration in blood. One method involves trypsin digestion, the second involves intact protein quantification and the third method is a combination of the first two.

Molecular crosstalk between insulin‐like growth factors and follicle‐stimulating hormone in the regulation of granulosa cell function

open access: yesReproductive Medicine and Biology, Volume 23, Issue 1, January/December 2024.
Crosstalk between insulin‐like growth factors and follicle‐stimulating hormone in the regulation of ovarian antral follicles. Abstract Background The last phase of folliculogenesis is driven by follicle‐stimulating hormone (FSH) and locally produced insulin‐like growth factors (IGFs), both essential for forming preovulatory follicles.
