Hijacking the human complement inhibitor C4b-binding protein by the sporozoite stage of the Plasmodium falciparum parasite

open access: yesFrontiers in Immunology, 2022
The complement system is considered the first line of defense against pathogens. Hijacking complement regulators from blood is a common evasion tactic of pathogens to inhibit complement activation on their surfaces.

Avian malaria co-infections confound infectivity and vector competence assays of Plasmodium homopolare. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Currently, there are very few studies of avian malaria that investigate relationships among the host-vector-parasite triad concomitantly. In the current study, we experimentally measured the vector competence of several Culex mosquitoes for a newly ...

Neospora caninum and Bovine Neosporosis: Current Vaccine Research [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Neospora caninum, a tissue cyst-forming parasite, is the causative agent of bovine neosporosis. It is considered to be one of the most important transmissible causes of reproductive failure in cattle; abortion and neonatal mortality result in significant

Killing of Plasmodium Sporozoites by Basic Amphipathic α-Helical Fusion Peptides

open access: yesMicroorganisms
Membranolytic molecules constitute the first line of innate immune defense against pathogenic microorganisms. Plasmodium sporozoites are potentially exposed to these cytotoxic molecules in the hemolymph and salivary glands of mosquitoes, as well as in ...

ELISPOT assay to measure antigen-specific murine CD8(+) T cell responses.

open access: yes, 2001
The enzyme-linked immunospot technique (ELISPOT) relies on the visualization of cytokine secretion by individual T cells following in vitro stimulation with antigen. This assay has been developed and standardized for the quantitative detection of antigen-

Dendritic cells in plasmodium infection [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Infection with Plasmodium parasites (malaria) contributes greatly to morbidity and mortality in affected areas. Interaction of the protozoan with the immune system has a critical role in the pathogenesis of the disease, but may also hold a key to ...

Protein trafficking through the endosomal system prepares intracellular parasites for a home invasion [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Toxoplasma (toxoplasmosis) and Plasmodium (malaria) use unique secretory organelles for migration, cell invasion, manipulation of host cell functions, and cell egress. In particular, the apical secretory micronemes and rhoptries of apicomplexan parasites

A potent adjuvant effect of a CD1d-binding NKT cell ligand in human immune system mice

open access: yesExpert Review of Vaccines, 2017
Objectives: A CD1d-binding invariant natural killer T (iNKT)-cell stimulatory glycolipid, namely 7DW8-5, is shown to enhance the efficacy of radiation-attenuated sporozoites (RAS)-based malaria vaccine in mice.

Goussia trichogasteri n. sp. (Apicomplexa: Eimenidae) infecting the aquarium-cultured golden gourami Trichogaster trichopterus trichopterus [PDF]

open access: yes, 1992
Goussia trichogasteri n. sp. is described from the gut of the aquarium fish Trichogaster trichopterus trichopterus. Gamogonic stages develop epicellularly in the gut epithelium. Oocysts are shed in early stage of sporulation.

Robust Bioconjugated Antigens Induce Immune Responses Preventing Malaria Infection and its Transmission

open access: yesSmall, EarlyView.
Engineered malaria antigens enable in vivo bioconjugation to submicron biopolymer particles in E. coli. Two antigens are co‐tethered at high density and defined stoichiometry. The resulting thermostable particles elicit strong, durable antibody and T‐cell responses, conferring robust protection and blocking mosquito transmission.
