An Aldol Switch Discovered in Stilbene Synthases Mediates Cyclization Specificity of Type III Polyketide Synthases [PDF]

open access: yesChemistry & Biology, 2004
Stilbene synthase (STS) and chalcone synthase (CHS) each catalyze the formation of a tetraketide intermediate from a CoA-tethered phenylpropanoid starter and three molecules of malonyl-CoA, but use different cyclization mechanisms to produce distinct chemical scaffolds for a variety of plant natural products.

Defence signalling triggered by Flg22 and Harpin is integrated into a different stilbene output in Vitis cells. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2012
Plants can activate defence to pathogen attack by two layers of innate immunity: basal immunity triggered by pathogen-associated molecular pattern (PAMP) triggered immunity (PTI) and effector-triggered immunity (ETI) linked with programmed cell death ...

Exploiting the Biosynthetic Potential of Type III Polyketide Synthases

open access: yesMolecules, 2016
Polyketides are structurally and functionally diverse secondary metabolites that are biosynthesized by polyketide synthases (PKSs) using acyl-CoA precursors.

Bioassay-Guided Isolation of Anti-Inflammatory Constituents of the Subaerial Parts of Cyperus articulatus (Cyperaceae)

open access: yesMolecules, 2022
Based on data from a previous ethnobotanical study in northern Angola, phytochemical investigations into the methanolic rhizomes and roots extract of Cyperus articulatus, monitored by in vitro assays, resulted in the recovery of 12 sesquiterpenes, 3 ...

Salt‐induced nutritional and metabolic shifts in halophytes: implications for food security

open access: yesJournal of the Science of Food and Agriculture, EarlyView.
Abstract Plant species vary in their response to salinity: some crops show a degree of salt tolerance, while halophytes – whether wild or cultivated – are characterized by a high capacity to thrive under saline conditions. Halophytes are considered a source of valuable secondary metabolites with potential economic value, yet they might also produce ...

Defense-Related Gene Expression Following an Orthotospovirus Infection Is Influenced by Host Resistance in Arachis hypogaea

open access: yesViruses, 2021
Planting resistant cultivars is the most effective tactic to manage the thrips-transmitted tomato spotted wilt orthotospovirus (TSWV) in peanut plants. However, molecular mechanisms conferring resistance to TSWV in resistant cultivars are unknown.

Phenolic profile of selected grape (Vitis vinifera L.) varieties in the course of ripening and Botrytis cinerea infections

open access: yesJournal of the Science of Food and Agriculture, EarlyView.
Abstract BACKGROUND Grapevine phenolic compounds play key roles in plant defense and wine quality. Composition depends on factors such as maturity and infections such as grey mold caused by Botrytis cinerea. Grapevines respond to infections by actively modifying their phenolic profile.

Integrated Signaling Network Involving Calcium, Nitric Oxide, and Active Oxygen Species but Not Mitogen-Activated Protein Kinases in BcPG1-Elicited Grapevine Defenses

open access: yesMolecular Plant-Microbe Interactions, 2006
We have already reported the identification of the endopolygalacturonase 1 (BcPG1) from Botrytis cinerea as a potent elicitor of defense responses in grapevine, independently of its enzymatic activity.

Enhanced Production of Pterostilbene in Escherichia coli Through Directed Evolution and Host Strain Engineering

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2021
Pterostilbene is a derivative of resveratrol with a higher bioavailability and biological activity, which shows antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antitumor, and antiaging activities. Here, directed evolution and host strain engineering were used to improve
