A longitudinal study of radiodensity and radiographic appearance of the proximal sesamoid bones in Thoroughbred racehorses

open access: yesEquine Veterinary Journal, Volume 58, Issue 4, Page 946-958, July 2026.
Abstract Background There are limited data on long‐term follow‐up of radiographic changes of the proximal sesamoid bones (PSBs) in Thoroughbred racehorses. The effect of training and racing on radiodensity of the PSBs in live Thoroughbreds has not been described.

Subchondral injection of human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells ameliorates knee osteoarthritis by inhibiting osteoblast apoptosis and TGF-beta activity

open access: yesStem Cell Research & Therapy
Background Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common degenerative disease caused by multiple pathological mechanisms wherein subchondral bone malfunction plays a substantial role.

Distal interphalangeal joint capsule enthesopathy of the middle phalanx and articular cartilage loss

open access: yesEquine Veterinary Journal, Volume 58, Issue 4, Page 1041-1048, July 2026.
Abstract Background Significant distal interphalangeal joint (DIPJ) pathology, particularly affecting soft tissue and articular cartilage, is often not identifiable on radiographs but can be accompanied by joint capsule enthesopathy on the middle phalanx (P2), which can be readily identified.

Serum Leptin Exacerbates Osteoarthritis by Promoting Subchondral Bone H‐Type Vessel Angiogenesis via Activation of the PI3K/AKT Pathway

open access: yesJournal of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, Volume 30, Issue 13, July 2026.
ABSTRACT Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common degenerative joint disease closely associated with obesity. Adipokines secreted by adipose tissue play critical roles in disease progression. This study focuses on the adipokine leptin and investigates its relationship with knee osteoarthritis.

Differential effects of alendronate on chondrocytes, cartilage matrix and subchondral bone structure in surgically induced osteoarthritis in mice

open access: yesScientific Reports
Bisphosphonates (BP) are considered a treatment option for osteoarthritis (OA) due to reduction of OA-induced microtrauma in the bone marrow, stabilization of subchondral bone (SB) layer and pain reduction.

A New Stage and Classification of Osteonecrosis of the Femoral Head Based on MRI With Pathophysiological Interpretation

open access: yesOrthopaedic Surgery, Volume 18, Issue 7, Page 1448-1458, July 2026.
An MRI‐based classification system integrating fibrosis extent (F1–F3) and inflammatory bone marrow edema activity (E0–E3) was developed for osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH). Increasing fibrosis and edema severity were associated with higher collapse risk, worse pain, and poorer hip function.

Protective effects of tumor necrosis factor-α blockade by adalimumab on articular cartilage and subchondral bone in a rat model of osteoarthritis

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Medical and Biological Research, 2015
We aimed to investigate the effects of an anti-tumor necrosis factor-α antibody (ATNF) on cartilage and subchondral bone in a rat model of osteoarthritis.
