BMI-related microstructural changes in the tibial subchondral trabecular bone of patients with knee osteoarthritis. [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of orthopaedic research : official publication of the Orthopaedic Research Society, 2016
Overweight is a risk factor for osteoarthritis on the knees. Subchondral trabecular bone (SCTB) densification has been shown to be associated with cartilage degeneration. This study analyzed the microarchitectural changes in the SCTB of tibial plateaus to validate the hypothesis that the degree of remodeling is correlated with a patient's body weight ...

Dynamic Alterations in Microarchitecture, Mineralization and Mechanical Property of Subchondral Bone in Rat Medial Meniscal Tear Model of Osteoarthritis

open access: yesChinese Medical Journal, 2015
Background: The properties of subchondral bone influence the integrity of articular cartilage in the pathogenesis of osteoarthritis (OA). However, the characteristics of subchondral bone alterations remain unresolved.

Paper 10: Characterization of Bone in Osteochondral Allografts Utilizing Inflammatory-Mediated Cellular Death Pathways

open access: yesOrthopaedic Journal of Sports Medicine, 2023
Objectives: Osteochondral allografts are used to treat chondral and osteochondral defects. While prior studies have correlated cell death within the chondral component of osteochondral allografts directly with clinical outcomes, cell death within the ...

The elastic moduli of human subchondral, trabecular, and cortical bone tissue and the size-dependency of cortical bone modulus [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Biomechanics, 1990
The elastic moduli of human subchondral, trabecular, and cortical bone tissue from a proximal tibia were experimentally determined using three-point bending tests on a microstructural level. The mean modulus of subchondral specimens was 1.15 GPa, and those of trabecular and cortical specimens was 4.59 GPa and 5.44 GPa respectively.

Influence of meniscus on cartilage and subchondral bone features of knees from older individuals: A cadaver study.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2017
ObjectiveCartilage and subchondral bone form a functional unit. Here, we aimed to examine the effect of meniscus coverage on the characteristics of this unit in knees of older individuals.MethodsWe assessed the hyaline cartilage, subchondral cortical ...

People in different age groups show different hip-joint morphology [PDF]

open access: yes, 1993
It has been suggested that the distribution of the subchondral bone density may be regarded as the expression of the long-term effective stress in a joint, and previous results indicate the regularity of the distribution of subchondral bone density as a ...

Local origins impart conserved bone type-related differences in human osteoblast behaviour [PDF]

open access: yesEuropean Cells & Materials, 2015
Osteogenic behaviour of osteoblasts from trabecular, cortical and subchondral bone were examined to determine any bone type-selective differences in samples from both osteoarthritic (OA) and osteoporotic (OP) patients.

Characterization and Advancement of an Evaluation Method for the Treatment of Spontaneous Osteoarthritis in STR/ort Mice: GRGDS Peptides as a Potential Treatment for Osteoarthritis

open access: yesBiomedicines, 2023
STR/ort mice spontaneously exhibit the typical osteoarthritis (OA) phenotype. However, studies describing the relationship between cartilage histology, epiphyseal trabecular bone, and age are lacking.
