Lingual abscesses in suckling and weaned lambs

Lingual abscesses were found in lambs from 2 midwestern flocks. Lesions resulted in reluctance to feed, emaciation, and death. Plant material was demonstrated at the center of abscesses in 1 flock. Veterinarians should examine tongues carefully when investigating lamb mortalities.

FOOD INTAKE CONTROL IN SUCKLING LAMBS

The increased fat content of milk diet diminished food intake in suckling lambs. A singificant inhibitory effect on food intake was also observed after the administration of glucose and lactose per os. It is supposed that food intake is regulated through peripheral lipostatic and glucostatic mechanisms.

Effects of Bovine Growth Hormone in Suckling Lambs

The objective of this study was to determine the effects of bovine growth hormone (bGH) on body growth of suckling lambs. Suckling Merino lambs (fed on milk replacer from 4th day of life) were daily injected from 10th to 38th day of life with 80 micrograms bGH/kg b.w. Only insignificant increase of body weight was observed after 4 weeks of GH treatment.

Ewe colostrum and subsequent lamb suckling behaviour

Behavioural and colostral data were obtained from 70 parous Border Leicester x Merino ewes (and their lambs) that lambed in 0.25 ha paddocks. Data collected included a colostral sample immediately postpartum, lamb weight and temperature, site of parturition and lamb sucking attempts to 48 h post-partum.
