Heterofucan from Sargassum filipendula Induces Apoptosis in HeLa Cells

open access: yesMarine Drugs, 2011
Fucan is a term used to denominate a family of sulfated polysaccharides rich in sulfated L-fucose. Heterofucan SF-1.5v was extracted from the brown seaweed Sargassum filipendula by proteolytic digestion followed by sequential acetone precipitation.

Presence of Exogenous Sulfate Is Mandatory for Tip Growth in the Brown Alga Ectocarpus subulatus

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science, 2020
Brown algae (Phaeophyceae) are multicellular photoautrophic organisms and the largest biomass producers in coastal regions. A variety of observations indicate that their extracellular matrix (ECM) is involved with screening of salts, development, cell ...

Sulfated fucans extracted from algae Padina gymnospora have anti-inflammatory effect [PDF]

open access: yesRevista Brasileira de Farmacognosia, 2012
Sulfated polysaccharides were extracted with acetone from brown algae Padina gymnospora. The fraction precipitated with 1.5 volumes of acetone (F1.5) purified in Sephadex G-75 was characterized by infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance of 13C and 1H, through which the presence of sulfate groups on the C4 of α-L-fucose could be observed.

Heterofucans from Dictyota menstrualis have anticoagulant activity

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Medical and Biological Research, 2004
Fucan is a term used to denote a family of sulfated L-fucose-rich polysaccharides which are present in the extracellular matrix of brown seaweed and in the egg jelly coat of sea urchins.

Structure and antiviral activity of sulfated fucans from Stoechospermum marginatum

open access: yesPhytochemistry, 2006
A sulfated fucan containing fraction (SmWE) was isolated from water extract of the brown seaweed Stoechospermum marginatum collected from the Arabian Sea. Anion exchange chromatography of the crude fraction results in the production of a sulfated fucan (F3) having a molecular mass of 40 kDa and specific rotation [alpha]D(30) - 124 degrees (c 0.5, H2O).

Is there a correlation between structure and anticoagulant action of sulfated galactans and sulfated fucans? [PDF]

open access: yesGlycobiology, 2002
We attempted to identify the specific structural features in sulfated galactans and sulfated fucans that confer anticoagulant activity. For this study we employed a variety of invertebrate polysaccharides with simple structures composed of well-defined units of oligosaccharides.

The Potential of Seaweeds as a Source of Functional Ingredients of Prebiotic and Antioxidant Value [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Two thirds of the world is covered by oceans, whose upper layer is inhabited by algae. This means that there is a large extension to obtain these photoautotrophic organisms.

Fucoidan and cancer: A multifunctional molecule with anti-tumor potential [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
There is a wide variety of cancer types yet, all share some common cellular and molecular behaviors. Most of the chemotherapeutic agents used in cancer treatment are designed to target common deregulated mechanisms within cancer cells.

Influence of Modified Fucoidan and Related Sulfated Oligosaccharides on Hematopoiesis in Cyclophosphamide-Induced Mice

open access: yesMarine Drugs, 2018
Immunosuppression derived after cytostatics application in cancer chemotherapy is considered as an adverse side effect that leads to deterioration of quality of life and risk of infectious diseases.
