Phytohormones and emerging plant growth regulators in tailoring plant immunity against viral infections

open access: yesPhysiologia Plantarum, Volume 177, Issue 2, March/April 2025.
Abstract Viral infections are major contributors to crop yield loss and represent a significant threat to sustainable agriculture. Plants respond to virus attacks by activating sophisticated signalling cascades that initiate multiple defence mechanisms.

Efficacy of β–Glucan From Microalgae on the Intestinal Health and Growth of Nursery Pigs

open access: yesAnimal Science Journal, Volume 96, Issue 1, January/December 2025.
ABSTRACT This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of β‐glucan from microalgae (Algamune, Algal Scientific, Plymouth, MI, USA) on the intestinal health and growth of nursery pigs. One hundred sixty nursery pigs (6.0 ± 1.6 kg BW) were assigned to four treatments arranged in a 2 × 2 factor: antibiotic use and β‐glucan supplementation (0.02% Algamune).

Possible role for cell-surface carbohydrate-binding molecules in lymphocyte recirculation. [PDF]

open access: yes, 1983
We are investigating the hypothesis that carbohydrate-binding molecules on the cell surface are involved in the recirculation of lymphocytes from the bloodstream into lymphoid organs.

A Novel Antivirally Active Fucan Sulfate Derived from an Edible Brown Alga, Sargassum horneri.

open access: yesChemical and Pharmaceutical Bulletin, 2001
A novel fucan sulfate (Hor-1) was isolated from the hot water extract of an edible brown alga, Sargassum horneri (Turner) C. Agardh. The fucan sulfate was revealed to have sugar linkage types, sulfate content and uronic acid content different from those of sodium hornan (Na-HOR), another fucan sulfate isolated from this alga.

Glycomolecules: from “sweet immunity” to “sweet biostimulation”?

open access: yesPhysiologia Plantarum, Volume 176, Issue 6, November/December 2024.
Abstract Climate changes and environmental contaminants are daunting challenges that require an urgent change from current agricultural practices to sustainable agriculture. Biostimulants are natural solutions that adhere to the principles of organic farming and are believed to have low impacts on the environment and human health.

The Effect of Sulfated (1→3)-α-l-Fucan from the Brown Alga Saccharina cichorioides Miyabe on Resveratrol-Induced Apoptosis in Colon Carcinoma Cells

open access: yesMarine Drugs, 2013
Accumulating data clearly indicate that the induction of apoptosis by nontoxic natural compounds is a potent defense against the development and progression of many malignancies, including colon cancer.

Space, the final frontier: The spatial component of phytoplankton–bacterial interactions

open access: yesMolecular Microbiology, Volume 122, Issue 3, Page 331-346, September 2024.
This review highlights the importance of spatial proximity between marine bacteria and unicellular algae in symbiotic associations. Bacterial strategies to achieve this proximity include attachment (irreversible or reversible) and directed or random encounters.
