Selective targeting of cortactin tandem repeat acetylation by human lysine deacetylases

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
Cortactin function is regulated by acetylation at several lysine residues within its tandem repeat region. Using genetic code expansion to generate cortactin variants containing precisely defined acetylation marks, we show that HDAC6 is the primary enzyme removing these modifications, with SIRT1 and SIRT2 also acting at selected sites but with lower ...

A new branch of mammalian vitamin B6 metabolism: AKR1C‐mediated conversion of pyridoxal to pyridoxine and 4‐pyridoxolactone

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
Pyridoxal 5′‐phosphate (PLP) homeostasis relies on salvage enzymes, yet key metabolic branches remain undefined. We identify AKR1C isozymes as previously undescribed contributors that convert pyridoxal into pyridoxine or 4‐pyridoxolactone through reductase and dehydrogenase activities.

Identifications of SUMO-1 cDNA and Its Expression Patterns in Pacific White Shrimp Litopeanaeus vannamei

open access: yesInternational Journal of Biological Sciences, 2009
Small ubiquitin-like modifiers (SUMO) work in a similar way as ubiquitin to alter the biological properties of a target protein by conjugation. A shrimp SUMO cDNA named LvSUMO-1 was identified in Litopenaeus vannamei.

Posttranslational modifications of GLUT4 affect its subcellular localization and translocation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The facilitative glucose transporter type 4 (GLUT4) is expressed in adipose and muscle and plays a vital role in whole body glucose homeostasis. In the absence of insulin, only ~1% of cellular GLUT4 is present at the plasma membrane, with the vast ...

Porphyromonas gingivalis GroEL accelerates abdominal aortic aneurysm formation by matrix metalloproteinase‐2 SUMOylation in vascular smooth muscle cells: A novel finding for the activation of MMP‐2

open access: yesMolecular Oral Microbiology, EarlyView.
Abstract Infection is a known cause of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), and matrix metalloproteases‐2 (MMP‐2) secreted by vascular smooth muscle cells (SMCs) plays a key role in the structural disruption of the middle layer of the arteries during AAA progression.

Anaplasma phagocytophilum-Occupied Vacuole Interactions with the Host Cell Cytoskeleton

open access: yesVeterinary Sciences, 2016
Anaplasma phagocytophilum is an obligate intracellular bacterial pathogen of humans and animals. The A. phagocytophium-occupied vacuole (ApV) is a critical host-pathogen interface.

The Structure of Carboxyl Methyltransferase Provides Insights Into the Substrate Specificity and Divergent Evolution of Iridoid

open access: yesPlant Biotechnology Journal, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Iridoids constitute a prominent class of plant‐specialised metabolites, with carbocyclic iridoids (e.g., geniposide) and secoiridoids (e.g., loganin) diverging early in their biosynthetic pathways. This divergence is marked by substrate‐specific carboxyl methyltransferases—GjGAMT and CrLAMT—that catalyse the decisive methylation step in ...

The ubiquitin system and jasmonate signaling [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
The ubiquitin (Ub) system is involved in most, if not all, biological processes in eukaryotes. The major specificity determinants of this system are the E3 ligases, which bind and ubiquitinate specific sets of proteins and are thereby responsible for ...
