Chemical synapses allow neurons to perform complex computations and regulate other systems of the body. At a chemical synapse, pre- and postsynaptic sites are separated by a small space (the synaptic cleft) and surrounded by astrocytes. The basement membrane (BM), a sheetlike, specialized extracellular matrix (ECM), is found ubiquitously in the PNS. It

Growth hormone (GH) and synaptogenesis
2020Growth hormone (GH) is known to exert several roles during development and function of the nervous system. Initially, GH was exclusively considered a pituitary hormone that regulates body growth and metabolism, but now its alternative extrapituitary production and pleiotropic functions are widely accepted.

Neuronal Differentiation and Synaptogenesis in Retinoblastoma
Cancer Research, 2007Abstract Retinoblastomas initiate in the developing retina in utero and are diagnosed during the first few years of life. We have recently generated a series of knockout mouse models of retinoblastoma that recapitulate the timing, location, and progression of human retinoblastoma.

Dendritic arbor development and synaptogenesis
Current Opinion in Neurobiology, 2001In vivo studies indicate that synaptic activity promotes dendritic arbor elaboration at early stages of brain development. At later stages of development, synaptic activity stabilizes dendritic structure. The different roles of synaptic activity with respect to structural plasticity probably reflect the regulated spatiotemporal expression of key ...

Synaptogenesis in the basilar papilla of the chick
Journal of Neurocytology, 1978Synaptogenesis was studied in the basilar papilla of chicken embryos from days 7--21 of incubation. On the 9th day of incubation differentiating hair cells first appeared and a few growing nerve tips made contact with them, although no membrane specializations were apparent at this stage.
