Neuronal THY1 Signaling Maintains Astrocytes in a Quiescent State

open access: yesGlia, EarlyView.
THY1‐bearing neurons keep astrocytes in a quiescent state via the interaction with ITGB1. Depletion of THY1 supports the development of a partially activated astrocyte phenotype. Neuronal THY1 is involved in the maintenance and restoration of tissue homeostasis in the brain. ABSTRACT THY1 is a cell surface protein of mature neurons.

Syndecan-1: a dynamic regulator of the myeloma microenvironment [PDF]

open access: yesClinical & Experimental Metastasis, 2007
Emerging data in myeloma and other cancers indicates that heparan sulfate proteoglycans promote tumor progression by enhancing their growth and metastasis. By acting as key regulators of cell signaling via their interactions with multiple growth and angiogenic factors, heparan sulfates mediate a shift in the microenvironment that supports the tumor as ...

Impact of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) on Short‐Term Outcomes of Cholecystectomy for Acute Cholecystitis: An Analysis of the US National Readmission Database, 2016–2020

open access: yesJournal of Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Sciences, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background/Purpose Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) may impact surgical outcomes of acute cholecystitis due to immune dysfunction and systemic inflammation. This study evaluated short‐term outcomes of cholecystectomy in SLE patients using US Nationwide Readmissions Database data.

Serum Syndecan-1 is Associated With Kidney and Cardiovascular Outcomes in Idiopathic Nephrotic Syndrome

open access: yesKidney International Reports
Introduction: Idiopathic nephrotic syndrome (INS) is associated with important kidney and cardiovascular morbidities. We tested the hypothesis that serum syndecan-1, a marker of endothelial glycocalyx injury, can help identify patients at risk for ...

The Role of Syndecan‐1 in Arterial Mechanotransduction

open access: yesThe FASEB Journal, 2010
Hemodynamic forces induced by blood flow are potent regulators of vascular homeostasis and arterial structure. While previous work has focused on the role of integrin receptors in mechanotransduction, little is known about the role of cell surface proteoglycans in these processes.

Breast Milk Proteome: Changes in the Different Stages of Lactation and Impacts of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus and Body Mass Index

open access: yesMolecular Nutrition &Food Research, EarlyView.
We analyzed colostrum and breast milk from 47 mothers to see how proteins change over time and with maternal health. Colostrum had more immune proteins, while mature milk had proteins linked to growth support. Gestational diabetes and higher BMI altered the protein composition.

Immunohistochemical analysis of syndecan-1 in leukoplakia and oral submucous fibrosis

open access: yesDental Research Journal, 2013
Background: Syndecan-1 is abundant in normal tissues and reduced in squamous cell carcinomas. Leukoplakia and oral submucous fibrosis (OSF) are oral pre-cancerous disorders that have potential for malignant transformation.

Circulating syndecan-1 is reduced in pregnancies with poor fetal growth and its secretion regulated by matrix metalloproteinases and the mitochondria

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2021
Fetal growth restriction is a leading cause of stillbirth that often remains undetected during pregnancy. Identifying novel biomarkers may improve detection of pregnancies at risk.
