3S - Systematic, systemic, and systems biology and toxicology
A biological system is more than the sum of its parts - it accomplishes many functions via synergy. Deconstructing the system down to the molecular mechanism level necessitates the complement of reconstructing functions on all levels, i.e., in our conceptualization of biology and its perturbations, our experimental models and computer modelling ...

A human microfluidic blood‐brain barrier (mBBB) model enables spatially resolved comparison of nanoparticle trafficking. Extracellular vesicles (EVs), liposomes, and nanoplastics exhibit distinct transport and disruption behaviors, revealing that membrane composition and uptake pathways govern BBB interaction.

The systems toxicology challenge
Risk assessment in the context of 21st century toxicology relies on the elucidation and understanding of mechanisms of toxicity. For that purpose, datasets generated by high-throughput technologies (e.g., high-throughput/content screening) combined with various omics data types are now generated in vitro to test large and diverse set of chemicals (e.g.

A Network Toxicology Approach for Mechanistic Modelling of Nanomaterial Hazard and Adverse Outcomes
Hazard assessment is the first step in evaluating the potential adverse effects of chemicals. Traditionally, toxicological assessment has focused on the exposure, overlooking the impact of the exposed system on the observed toxicity.

Antidote application: an educational system for treatment of common toxin overdose [PDF]
Poisonings account for almost 1% of emergency room visits each year. Time is a critical factor in dealing with a toxicologic emergency. Delay in dispensing the first antidote dose can lead to life-threatening sequelae.
