Detection of minority variants within bovine respiratory syncytial virus populations using oligonucleotide-based microarrays [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Microarray technology, originally developed for highly parallel examination of gene expression is regarded as a potential tool in prognosis and diagnosis.

Energy, ageing, fidelity and sex: oocyte mitochondrial DNA as a protected genetic template [PDF]

open access: yesPhilosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences, 2013
Oxidative phosphorylation couples ATP synthesis to respiratory electron transport. In eukaryotes, this coupling occurs in mitochondria, which carry DNA. Respiratory electron transport in the presence of molecular oxygen generates free radicals, reactive oxygen species (ROS), which are mutagenic.

Engineering the Caenorhabditis elegans Genome Using Cas9-Triggered Homologous Recombination

open access: yesNature Methods, 2013
Study of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans has provided important insights in a wide range of fields in biology. The ability to precisely modify genomes is critical to fully realize the utility of model organisms. Here we report a method to edit the C.

Modular Golden Gate Assembly of Linear DNA Templates for Cell-free Prototyping [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2023
Cell-free transcription and translation (TXTL) systems have emerged as a powerful tool for testing genetic regulatory elements and circuits. Cell-free prototyping can dramatically accelerate the design-build-test cycle of new functions in synthetic biology, in particular when linear DNA templates are used.

Refining the NaV1.7 pharmacophore of a class of venom‐derived peptide inhibitors via a combination of in silico screening and rational engineering

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Venom peptides have shown promise in treating pain. Our study uses computer screening to identify a peptide that targets a sodium channel (NaV1.7) linked to chronic pain. We produced the peptide in the laboratory and refined its design, advancing the search for innovative pain therapies.

miRNA‐29 regulates epidermal and mesenchymal functions in skin repair

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
miRNA‐29 inhibits cell‐to‐cell and cell‐to‐matrix adhesion by silencing mRNA targets. Adhesion is controlled by complex interactions between many types of molecules coded by mRNAs. This is crucial for keeping together the layers of the skin and for regenerating the skin after wounding.

Drivers of within-host genetic diversity in acute infections of viruses.

open access: yesPLoS Pathogens, 2020
Genetic diversity is the fuel of evolution and facilitates adaptation to novel environments. However, our understanding of what drives differences in the genetic diversity during the early stages of viral infection is somewhat limited. Here, we use ultra-

Effective Use of Linear DNA in Cell-Free Expression Systems

open access: yesFrontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology, 2021
Cell-free expression systems (CFEs) are cutting-edge research tools used in the investigation of biological phenomena and the engineering of novel biotechnologies. While CFEs have many benefits over in vivo protein synthesis, one particularly significant

Review of Religion Explained-- The Evolutionary Origins of Religious Thought by Pascal Boyer (2002) (review revised 2019) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
You can get a quick summary of this book on p 135 or 326. If you are not up to speed on evolutionary psychology, you should first read one of the numerous recent texts with this term in the title.
