After activation, CD4 helper T (Th) cells differentiate into Th1or Th2 effector subsets. These two types of cells produce distinct profiles of cytokines and regulate different immune responses. This review summarizes recent progress on different features of co-stimulatory regulation and chemokine-mediated homing of Th1 and Th2 cells.

T helper cells contribute to the induction and maintenance of rheumatic inflammation through the secretion of cytokines. The analysis of Th1 cells expressing interferon-γ, Th17 cells expressing interleukin-17 and the newly described Th1+17 cells could give insight into the pathophysiological mechanisms of rheumatic diseases.

Abstract The Th1/Th2 paradigm provides a useful model for understanding the pathogenesis of several diseases, as well as for developing novel immunotherapeutic strategies. Here, Sergio Romagnani examines Th1/Th2 polarization in the context of associated pathophysiological conditions.

Cytokines produced by T helper (Th) cells are of critical importance for the outcome of many infectious diseases. Producing the "right" set of cytokines in response to an infectious agent can be a matter of life or death. The Th1/Th2 dichotomy, although an oversimplification has proven useful in the analysis of immune responses to infections.

Th1/Th2 balance in preeclampsia
Journal of Reproductive Immunology, 2003The syndrome of preeclampsia has previously been ascribed to generalized maternal endothelial dysfunction, poor placentation and excessive maternal inflammatory response. Recent reports suggest that preeclampsia is associated with a Th1 predominant profile and may be considered as a failure of the tolerance system allowing the second physiological ...

TH1-TH2: a Procrustean paradigm
Nature Immunology, 2003Although immunologists have found the dichotomous helper T cell subset model a useful construct, it is beginning to show its age. Some suggest that proponents of the TH1-TH2 dichotomy are overzealous in making the data conform to the scheme, like Procrustes who stretched or truncated his guests so that they would fit his guest bed.

Revisiting the Th1/Th2 Paradigm
Scandinavian Journal of Immunology, 1998The identification of subsets of CD4+ helper cells producing distinct pattern of cytokines has provided a valuable framework for understanding how different effector populations of immune cells can be recruited in vivo during infection. In the view of most investigators, Th1 and Th2 cells produce factors that serve as their own autocrine factors and ...

Genetic Polymorphism and Th1/Th2 Orientation
International Archives of Allergy and Immunology, 2005Background: It is likely that besides developmental and environmental factors, genetic factors also play an important role in Th1/Th2 orientation and susceptibility to related disorders. Thus, for each genetic factor involved one would expect an opposite pattern of susceptibility towards Th1- and Th2-associated diseases.

We have previously shown that at least two types of Lyt-1+, Lyt-2-, L3T4+ helper T cell clones can be distinguished in vitro by different patterns of lymphokine secretion and by different forms of B cell help.

MIG Th1 chemokine in Vitiligo.
La Clinica terapeutica, 2018The importance of the Type-1 helper immune response in the development of Vitiligo (Vit), and of chemokine receptor (CXCR)3 receptor and its chemokine monokine induced by interferon (IFN)-γ(MIG) has been shown by several studies. MIG/ interferon (IFN)-γ-inducible protein 10 (IP10) /CXCR3 axis mediated T-cell recruitment into the skin in Vit is an early
