Astrocytes refine cortical connectivity at dendritic spines
During cortical synaptic development, thalamic axons must establish synaptic connections despite the presence of the more abundant intracortical projections.

Higher-order thalamocortical inputs gate synaptic long-term potentiation via disinhibition
Sensory experience and perceptual learning changes the receptive field properties of cortical pyramidal neurons, largely mediated by long-term potentiation (LTP) of synapses. The circuit mechanisms underlying cortical LTP remain unclear.

Abstract Objectives Obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD) is a psychiatric disorder with alterations of cortico‐striato‐thalamo‐cortical loops and impaired performance monitoring. Electrophysiological markers such as conflict‐related medial frontal theta (MFT) and error‐related negativity (ERN) may be altered by clinically effective deep brain ...

A prefrontal thalamocortical readout for conflict-related executive dysfunction in schizophrenia
Summary: Executive dysfunction is a prominent feature of schizophrenia and may drive core symptoms. Dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) deficits have been linked to schizophrenia executive dysfunction, but mechanistic details critical for treatment ...

A Case for Thalamic Mechanisms of Schizophrenia: Perspective From Modeling 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome
Schizophrenia is a severe, chronic psychiatric disorder that devastates the lives of millions of people worldwide. The disease is characterized by a constellation of symptoms, ranging from cognitive deficits, to social withdrawal, to hallucinations ...

Spindle oscillations are generated in the dorsal thalamus and modulated by the thalamic reticular nucleus [PDF]
Spindle waves occur during the early stage of slow wave sleep and are thought to arise in the thalamic reticular nucleus (TRN), causing inhibitory postsynaptic potential spindle-like oscillations in the dorsal thalamus that are propagated to the cortex ...

Magnetomechanical neuromodulation using magnetic nanodiscs enables remote activation of neurons. In a hemiparkinsonian mouse model, alternating magnetic fields actuate the nanodiscs to generate torque that opens mechanosensitive ion channels within the subthalamic nucleus, thereby modulating basal ganglia motor circuitry.

Abstract Objectives Central poststroke pain (CPSP), a neuropathic pain condition, is difficult to treat. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) targeted to the primary motor cortex (M1) can alleviate the condition, but not all patients respond. We aimed to assess a promising alternative rTMS target, the secondary somatosensory cortex (S2),

Organization of the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus in the mouse [PDF]
The dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (dLGN) of the thalamus is the principal conduit for visual information from retina to visual cortex. Viewed initially as a simple relay, recent studies in the mouse reveal far greater complexity in the way input from

Abstract Teaching white matter (WM) anatomy to undergraduates is challenging. This is partly because WM fibers are oriented intricately and Klingler's dissection, the gold standard method used to demonstrate it, often requires time, advanced anatomical knowledge, and refined dissection skills.
