Red blood cell membrane proteome as a reporter of disease severity, transfusion impact and genetic background in transfusion‐dependent β‐thalassaemia

open access: yesBritish Journal of Haematology, Volume 208, Issue 6, Page 1980-1992, June 2026.
Summary Omics technologies have transformed research in haemoglobinopathies, yet the proteome of RBCs remains largely unexplored in transfusion‐dependent thalassaemia (TDT). In this proteomic analysis, Red blood cell (RBC) membranes from 48 adults with TDT were compared with healthy controls.

The competitive interplay of 12‐oxophytodienoic acid (OPDA), protein thiols, and glutathione

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, Volume 293, Issue 12, Page 3683-3705, June 2026.
12‐Oxophytodienoic acid (OPDA) is a phytohormone involved in plant growth and stress defense. Due to its cyclopentenone moiety, OPDA can form Michael adducts with thiol‐containing compounds such as glutathione and cysteine residues of proteins, resulting in alterations of the cellular redox regulatory network.

The diversity and evolution of thioredoxin reductase: new perspectives

open access: yes
The thioredoxin system is a major line of cellular defence against oxygen damage. Two distinct thioredoxin reductases found in eukaryotes have different catalytic mechanisms and a mutually exclusive distribution reflecting a complex evolutionary history.

Redundant and Flexible Electron Transfer Pathways Underlie MsrPQ‐Mediated Repair of Oxidized Periplasmic Proteins

open access: yesMolecular Microbiology, Volume 125, Issue 6, Page 493-505, June 2026.
This study investigates in vivo the role of the flavin reductase Fre as an electron supplier to the periplasmic methionine sulfoxide reductase system MsrPQ. ABSTRACT The MsrPQ system is essential for the repair of oxidized methionine residues in periplasmic proteins, ensuring bacterial resistance to oxidative stress and envelope integrity.

Deciphering photosynthetic protein networks: a crosslinking‐MS strategy for studying functional thylakoid membranes

open access: yesThe Plant Journal, Volume 126, Issue 5, June 2026.
SUMMARY Photosynthesis, which sustains life on Earth, depends on organized and yet adaptable protein assemblies embedded in specialized membranes known as thylakoids. Understanding how these complexes interact and reorganize within functional photosynthetic membranes is essential to reveal the molecular basis of energy conversion in cells.

Overexpression of cytosolic NADP‐malic enzyme 1 from the common ice plant enhances water‐deficit and high‐light stress tolerance by modulating water‐use efficiency and flavonoid biosynthesis

open access: yesThe Plant Journal, Volume 126, Issue 5, June 2026.
SUMMARY Innovative strategies are essential to enhance crop resilience against drought and heat stress intensified by climate change. Crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) is a specialized photosynthetic pathway that improves water‐use efficiency (WUE) by shifting CO2 fixation to the nighttime. The common ice plant (Mesembryanthemum crystallinum) utilizes
