Babesiosis can cause severe tissue hypoxia with consequent widespread tissue damage and probable release of inflammatory mediators (Lobetti, 1998). The major mediators are cytokines, nitric oxide, free oxygen radicals, eicosanoids, and platelet-activating factor (Purvis et al., 1994).
