Regulatory immune cells in transplantation. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Immune regulation is fundamental to any immune response to ensure that it is appropriate for the perceived threat to the host. Following cell and organ transplantation, it is essential to control both the innate immune response triggered by the injured ...

Immunity and Tolerance Induced by Intestinal Mucosal Dendritic Cells

open access: yesMediators of Inflammation, 2016
Dendritic cells present in the digestive tract are constantly exposed to environmental antigens, commensal flora, and invading pathogens. Under steady-state conditions, these cells have high tolerogenic potential, triggering differentiation of regulatory

Regulatory dendritic cells for immunotherapy in immunologic diseases

open access: yesFrontiers in Immunology, 2014
We recognize well the abilities of dendritic cells to activate effector T cell responses to an array of antigens and we think of these cells in this context as pre-eminent antigen presenting cells, but dendritic cells are also critical to the induction ...

Tolerogenic effect of mouse fibroblasts on dendritic cells [PDF]

open access: yesImmunology, 2016
SummaryThere is controversy about the immunomodulatory effect of fibroblasts on dendritic cells (DCs). To clarify this issue, in this study, we have evaluated different features of fibroblast‐primed DCs including their ability to express co‐inhibitory and co‐stimulatory molecules, pro‐inflammatory and anti‐inflammatory cytokines and their ability to ...

Human Tolerogenic Dendritic Cells Regulate Immune Responses through Lactate Synthesis

open access: yes, 2022
S.1075-1090Cell therapy is a promising strategy for treating patients suffering from autoimmune or inflammatory diseases or receiving a transplant. Based on our preclinical studies, we have generated human autologous tolerogenic dendritic cells (ATDCs ...

Costimulatory molecules on immunogenic versus tolerogenic human dendritic cells

open access: yesFrontiers in Immunology, 2013
Dendritic cells (DC) are sentinels of immunity, essential for homeostasis of T cell-dependent immune responses. Both functions of DC, initiation of antigen-specific T cell immunity and maintenance of tissue-specific tolerance originate from distinct ...

Ionizable Lipid‐Dependent Optimization of Steroid Lipid Nanoparticles With Tunable Immunomodulatory Properties

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
A novel engineering strategy that establishes material design principles for incorporating anti‐inflammatory steroids into lipid nanoparticles to reduce LNP‐induced inflammation while retaining mRNA delivery. Results are validated in vitro and in three animal models of inflammation and autoimmunity in vivo.

Tolerogenic function of Blimp-1 in dendritic cells [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Experimental Medicine, 2011
Blimp-1 has been identified as a key regulator of plasma cell differentiation in B cells and effector/memory function in T cells. We demonstrate that Blimp-1 in dendritic cells (DCs) is required to maintain immune tolerance in female but not male mice. Female mice lacking Blimp-1 expression in DCs (DCBlimp-1ko) or haploid for Blimp-1 expression exhibit

Aptamer‐Engineered Liposomal Platform Enables in Situ cDC1 Vaccination to Potentiate Immunotherapy in Prostate Cancer

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Prostate cancer is immunologically ‘cold’, with scarce, dysfunctional type 1 conventional dendritic cells (cDC1s) that limit T cell priming. We introduce an aptamer‐targeted liposomedelivering FMS‐like tyrosine kinase 3 ligand (Flt3L) and chlorin e6 (Ce6). Ultrasound induces antigen release and cDC1s recruitment, creating an in situ cDC1 vaccine.

Nested Selves: Self‐Organization and Shared Markov Blankets in Prenatal Development in Humans

open access: yesTopics in Cognitive Science, EarlyView., 2023
Abstract The immune system is a central component of organismic function in humans. This paper addresses self‐organization of biological systems in relation to—and nested within—other biological systems in pregnancy. Pregnancy constitutes a fundamental state for human embodiment and a key step in the evolution and conservation of our species. While not
