Tonic inhibition of small intestinal motility by nitric oxide

Journal of the Autonomic Nervous System, 1993
The effects of blocking nitric oxide synthase with the arginine analog N omega-nitro-L-arginine (L-NNA) were investigated in anaesthetized cats, vagotomized and pretreated with guanethidine and atropine. Spontaneous NANC jejunal motility (recorded as the volume changes of an intraluminal balloon) was markedly increased in a dose-dependent and ...

Substrate-Selective Inhibition of Mitochondrial Oxidations by Enhanced Tonicity

Nature, 1958
DURING an investigation of factors controlling rates of oxidation by mitochondria, it was found that variations of sucrose concentration in the suspending medium profoundly inhibited the oxygen consumption with some substrates but had much less effect with others.

Rhythmic vs. Tonic Inhibition

2017
In experiments described in [143], fast-firing inhibitory interneurons in the barrel cortex of mice, the part of the mouse brain that processes input from the whiskers, were driven to synchronize at 40 Hz, using optogenetic techniques. (In general, optogenetic techniques involve genetically sensitizing neurons to light, then using light to control ...

Tonic inhibition of thermoregulation in the decerebrate monkey (Saimiri sciureus)

Experimental Neurology, 1979
Abstract In monkeys ( Saimiri sciureus ) acute truncation of the brain stem just caudal to the hypothalamus or rostral to the pons results in a preparation which rapidly loses body heat without shivering, piloerection, and vasoconstriction of cutaneous vessles.

Tonic inhibition by orphanin FQ/nociceptin of noradrenaline neurotransmission in the amygdala

European Journal of Pharmacology, 2004
The present microdialysis study investigated whether nociceptin/orphanin FQ exerts a tonic inhibition of the release of noradrenaline in the basolateral nucleus of the amygdala in awake rats. The non-peptide competitive nociceptin/orphanin FQ (N/OFQ) peptide receptor antagonist J-113397 (20 mg/kg i.p.) induced an increase in the release of ...

Somatostatin tonically inhibits growth hormone secretion in domestic fowl

Journal of Endocrinology, 1986
ABSTRACT Passive immunization of immature chickens with sheep somatostatin (SRIF) antiserum promptly increased the basal plasma GH concentration and augmented TRH-induced GH secretion. Although exogenous SRIF had no inhibitory effect on the basal GH concentration in untreated birds or birds pretreated with non-immune sheep serum, it suppressed ...

Serotonin neurons are necessary for tonic sodium intake inhibition

American Journal of Physiology-Regulatory, Integrative and Comparative Physiology
This study demonstrates a fundamental role for serotonergic neurons in limiting sodium intake. Mice with genetic deletion of serotonin-producing neurons consume more salt, indicating that serotonergic neurons act like a brake to restrain sodium appetite. These findings advance our understanding of how the brain controls salt-seeking behavior.

[Tonic mechanisms of efferent inhibition in the frog labyrinth].

Bollettino della Societa italiana di biologia sperimentale, 1981
Activation of the efferent system of the isolated group labyrinth inhibits the afferent EPSP and spike discharge by releasing ACh, which opens the Cl- channel of the hair cells membrane. Experiments in which increasing amounts of Cl- in the bath are replaced by equivalent amounts of Br-, NO2-, NO3-, CH3 CO2-, SO4(2-), CH3CH2CO2-, CH3(CH2)2CO2-, CH3(CH2)
